Pleinfeld brings together a variety of themes for planning your trip: hiking and cycling, local history and the beach on the Great Brombach Lake. If you are looking for a hotel in Pleinfeld, you can first consider whether trails, water or culture should be the main focus of your stay.

Pleinfeld

Landscape and Lakeshore

The Erlenauwald and Feuchtwiese bei Mischelbach landscape area is located in the Pleinfeld district of Mischelbach, along the Igelseebach stream. It lies in the border area between the Franconian Lake District and Altmühltal Nature Park, has been protected since 1992 and covers about 10.34 hectares. The name refers to two distinct landscape types: an alder floodplain forest and a wet meadow.

Another connection with water is the Pleinfeld recreational area on the southeast shore of the Great Brombach Lake. It includes a beach. If you are planning a swim, bear in mind that seasonal conditions may affect access.

Hiking and Cycling

Hiking Trail Pleinfeld No. 82 starts at the forest car park on the edge of town near the sports park. It passes through Mandlesmühle to Allmannsdorf and returns to Pleinfeld via the Brombachsee main dam. Along the way, there are views over the lake and into the Brombachtal valley. At Mandlesmühle, the route also passes the Franconian Lake District Information Centre. Check local conditions before setting out. Pleinfeld is a good starting point for longer excursions on the “Der Seenländer” circular hiking trail.

Cycling routes are another consideration when planning your trip: The area around Pleinfeld has mostly flat, well-developed and consistently signposted routes that run from lake to lake or around the lakes. They run almost entirely away from road traffic and are particularly suitable for families with children. Conditions may vary from one route to another.

Local History and Roman Traces

The local history and brewing museum preserves evidence of Pleinfeld’s history since the Middle Ages. The attic houses a brewing section on beer production: the exhibition covers everything from hops to wooden casks and swing-top bottles. This brings local history together with a specific aspect of the town’s brewing tradition.

Near Gündersbach is a small fort belonging to a series of structures measuring about 20 × 20 metres. They were built as part of the Roman frontier defences immediately behind the Limes line. The show garden at Mandlesmühle offers another reminder of life in the region: it commemorates the village culture lost beneath the lakes.

Roman Heritage in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen District

The wider context includes the Limes, which runs for around 40 kilometres across the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. The Roman Museum in Weißenburg displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. These regional sites complement the Roman traces at Pleinfeld.

Getting There by Train

Trains depart from Pleinfeld station in both directions approximately every half hour. Check the current timetable before travelling. One example timetable lists a journey time of 35 minutes for the train connection from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof to Pleinfeld. For your specific journey, check the current service, as departure times and journey times may change.
