Heidenheim
Accommodation in Heidenheim
When choosing a hotel in Heidenheim, you can focus on three local themes: monastic history, music in the minster and the Way of St. James pilgrimage route. Each gives your trip a different focus—from a historic building to a recurring cultural offering to a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
Monastic history, pilgrimage route and minster concerts
Despite further alterations by the Margraves of Ansbach after the Reformation, Heidenheim Monastery is one of the few surviving Benedictine reform monasteries in Central Europe. The surviving monastery and its post-Reformation history give the town its historical character. The Way of St. James pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela passes through Heidenheim. Rather than focusing on a single building, this route connects the town with a named pilgrimage destination.
The Local History and Potter’s Museum is another part of Heidenheim’s cultural offering. It is housed in a medieval tithe barn, giving the museum building its own historical significance. Numerous concerts are held in Heidenheim Minster every year. If music is one of your travel interests, you can take this recurring offering into account when planning your dates. Check the specific concert dates for the period of your stay.
Roman heritage in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district
The wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen offers additional regional attractions. The Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. Numerous Roman watchtowers, forts and fragments of bathhouses bear witness to the district’s Roman history.
In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure hoard and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths; the Biriciana fort has been partially reconstructed. In Weißenburg, you can therefore explore the museum’s exhibits and various other traces of Roman heritage as separate points of interest.
Another historic destination in the district is the old Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg. It stands above Weißenburg on the highest hilltop in the southern Franconian Jura, at 630 m, and is an impressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Weather permitting, guided tours are offered from May to October. Check the dates and whether tours are going ahead before planning a visit.
Hiking trails, cycling route and water in Altmühltal Nature Park
The southern part of the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district lies within Altmühltal Nature Park. For hiking, the Weißenburg Way Via Biriciana follows old Roman roads to the Limes. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail runs for 200 kilometres along the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the nature park and is certified by the German Hiking Association as a “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland.” If formal certification is important to your plans, check its current status.
The Altmühltal Cycle Route offers another option: it runs for around 160 kilometres through the nature park from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim. This lets you choose between the 200-kilometre panorama trail on foot and a cycling route of around 160 kilometres, with the same stated endpoints. There is also a boat route on the Altmühl through the nature park; between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging, it is just under 120 kilometres long. Navigation conditions may vary seasonally, so it is advisable to check before planning.
Altmühlsee lies northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. Water sports are generally permitted on the lakes in the district, but on Igelsbachsee only as part of the right of public use. Bear this distinction in mind when choosing a body of water, and check the applicable rules. Ornithological guided tours by the Bavarian branch of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union are offered on the approximately 120-hectare Bird Island in Altmühlsee. Check availability before your trip.
