Thalmässing
Accommodation in Thalmässing
Thalmässing offers two clear starting points for a stay: the Archaeology Museum and the Gredl Cycle Path, which runs right through the town along a former railway line. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can cater to different interests, including archaeology and cycling. When planning your trip, consider not only what is available locally but also whether you want to make Thalmässing your main focus or include other destinations in the wider Roth travel destination.
Archaeology Museum: Get involved and explore
The Archaeology Museum is located on Thalmässing’s Market Square. Its children’s section is aimed at children and young people and offers hands-on activities, including exploring a walk-in burial chamber and tracing Celtic ornaments. An interactive 3D landscape relief adds information about hilltop settlements, central places, rural settlements and raw materials used in the past. The 3D relief offers a different kind of activity from tracing the ornaments. If you are planning a visit, check the museum’s current operating conditions in advance.
Cycling in Thalmässing
The Gredl Cycle Path runs right through Thalmässing along a former railway line. The approximately 30-kilometre cycle path is easy to follow and has few steep climbs. The route length and gradient give you two different ways to plan: the extent of the ride and its elevation profile.
More tours in the wider Roth travel destination
The RH hoch 2 circular cycle tour follows the district boundaries and circles the entire district of Roth for more than 200 kilometres. By contrast, the Gredl Cycle Path through Thalmässing is a much shorter route of approximately 30 kilometres. The wider Roth travel destination is also home to the KammerSTEINPILZpfad in Kammerstein: the four-kilometre trail passes ten mushroom nests with quiz questions and a playground along the way.
The “An der Kleinen Roth” nature trail follows the stream of the same name, which rises east of Allersberg and gives the Rothsee its name. The trail is 2.3 kilometres long and has seven information stations. The 210-hectare Rothsee lies between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg.
The Gredl-Express 636 leisure bus runs from Hilpoltstein via Thalmässing and Greding to Kinding and back. Along the way, it passes numerous sights in the district of Roth, including half-timbered villages, Baroque and Rococo buildings, and museums with archaeological finds. As the route may change seasonally, check the current timetable before travelling.
In the wider Roth travel destination, the Rothsee Environmental Education Centre offers year-round guided tours tailored to age and ability for school classes, kindergarten groups, people with disabilities and visitor groups. During school holidays and at weekends, there is an open programme for children and families; they can also explore the centre independently. For current dates, contact the operator.
Another craft-related attraction in the Roth travel destination is the regular blacksmithing demonstrations at the former Schäff iron hammer near Eckersmühlen.
