Discover Georgensgmünd
Accommodation in Georgensgmünd
Georgensgmünd offers several ways to spend your stay: outdoor trails and art, opportunities for play and exercise, and local history. When looking for a hotel, you can consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The Sculpture Trail, Planet Trail and Jewish ensemble each offer a different focus.
Outdoor Trails and Art
The accessible Sculpture Trail is 2.4 kilometres long. It follows a level footpath and cycle path from the “Am Bruckespan” leisure park towards Roth, as far as Oberheckenhofen. Fifteen works of art in Jura limestone, steel and wood stand along the route. The trail thus combines a specific distance with artworks made from a range of materials.
The 7.5-kilometre Planet Trail educational path illustrates the relative sizes in our solar system. Compared with the two trails, the Sculpture Trail is significantly shorter; they also differ in subject matter. This information can help you match the distance and your interests when planning your day.
The public “Am Bruckespan” leisure park is located directly on the Franconian Rezat. It has a pavilion, swings, a beach volleyball court, a double cable ride, a tunnel slide, a basketball court, a climbing wall, a play lawn, a sandbox, a baby slide and a boules court. In winter, there is also a natural ice-skating area; ice conditions can vary.
Jewish Heritage and the Townscape
A restored synagogue, a large Jewish cemetery and a Taharahaus (ritual washing house for the dead) form a fully preserved ensemble. It documents the former Jewish religious life of the rural area. The former synagogue displays religious books, prayer straps (tefillin), prayer shawls (tallit katan) and other objects from religious life that were found in the Georgensgmünd Geniza.
A prominent landmark visible from afar is the octagonal tower of the Protestant St. George’s Church. It is roofed with green-glazed tiles. Near the town hall, a gilded sun with a diameter of 1.4 metres also stands on a steel plinth.
The historic waterwheel in Georgensgmünd is still in operation and recalls Friedrichsgmünd’s industrial past. The annual Waterwheel Festival, organised by local associations in early summer with numerous attractions, is named after it. As dates and programmes vary, check the latest information before your visit.
Planning Your Hikes
The car park by the waterwheel is the main starting point for hiking trails in Georgensgmünd; there are plenty of parking spaces for cars. Information boards about the hiking trails are also located by the waterwheel on the Rezat. If you are planning a walking trip, you will find a described starting point and information about the trails here. When choosing your hotel, you can consider whether you would like to include hiking trails, outdoor art or local history in your stay.
