Heideck: Town History, Cycling Routes and Nature
Accommodation in Heideck
When looking for a hotel in Heideck, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: town history, cycling and hiking, or seasonal leisure activities. Each option has its own character: you can discover historic buildings and art on a town walk, choose from a variety of routes, or plan your visit around event dates.
Town History and Art
On a walking tour of Heideck, you’ll encounter traces of the town’s eventful history. Eva Schultheiß guides visitors through various streets to noteworthy buildings, explaining their origins and key details.
The Church of St. John the Baptist houses a Late Gothic Madonna from the circle of Hans Leinberger, possibly even by the artist himself. It was created in the early 16th century, when Heideck belonged to Bavaria-Landshut. The workshop connection is therefore part of the artwork’s story, along with the period in which it was created.
Cycling and Hiking
The fully paved Gredl cycling and hiking trail passes through Heideck’s Seiboldsmühle district. It is suitable for hiking, cycling, and skating, and there are also routes with varying levels of difficulty. This gives you a choice of activities and challenges when planning your tour.
The Heideck Castle Trail runs from Heideck via Liebenstadt to the Altenheideck castle site, back to Liebenstadt, and onward to the Schloßberg castle site and Rudletzholz, before returning to Heideck. If you’re looking for a route with several named stops, you can distinguish it from a walk focused on the town’s history.
The Laibstadt History Trail explores the area around Laibstadt, which is 950 years old and politically part of the town of Heideck. The “Höfener Hohlweg” nature trail focuses on natural history: it passes through geologically diverse zones and three different habitats. Four information boards highlight important native animal and plant species; typical indicator plants are marked with labels and QR codes.
Two nearby castle sites also offer different points of historical interest. At the Schloßberg castle site, about 3 km southwest of Heideck, the plateaus of the outer and main castles and two deep neck ditches have been preserved. The Altenheideck castle site is about 4.5 km west of Heideck. In 2007, vegetation was cleared, the site was surveyed, and an observation platform was built.
Leisure Activities and Events
Heideck’s municipal outdoor swimming pool offers more than 1,000 m² of water surface during the summer season, and the water is heated. The non-swimmers’ pool has a 16-meter-wide wave slide, while the diving pool has a 5-meter diving platform. As the pool operates seasonally, check current visiting options for your travel dates.
The low ropes course at the Schloßberg Family Adventure Trail features 23 elements arranged in a circular course. It offers opportunities for playful competition and cooperative group activities. This makes it different from routes focused on cycling, hiking, or nature information.
The Heideck Heritage Festival, known throughout the region, takes place on the third weekend in July. The exact date varies from year to year, so check the city’s current event listing before your trip.
