Churches, Festivals and the Cycle of the Year

The Catholic Church of St. Martin is located in Blaichach. In the district of Altmummen, the Catholic Chapel of St. Florian dates back to the 18th century and features a magnificent altarpiece. The two buildings are different points of reference for the village’s religious history: a church in Blaichach and a chapel in the district.

The Martinusritt horse procession and blessing has taken place annually in Blaichach since 1652. The Advent market is also held every year, on the eve of the first Sunday of Advent; it takes place on the paved forecourt of the church and town hall. In Gunzesried, a district of Blaichach, the Viehscheid cattle drive is held every year on September 17. In mid-September, herders drive their livestock from the alpine pastures down into the valley for the Viehscheid in the Gunzesrieder Tal. When choosing your travel dates, the Viehscheid in September and the Advent market before the first Sunday of Advent are two clearly dated occasions; the Martinusritt is another recurring annual tradition.

The 3-Seen-Runde starts at Blaichach railway station and follows the Iller Cycle Path to Inselsee. This lets you combine a clearly defined tour starting point with leisure activities at the destination.

The Gunzesried-Säge cross-country ski trail is located nearby. It is 12.5 kilometres long and rated difficult; snow conditions and grooming may vary. Gunzesried is known for its flora, fauna and hiking trails. In the Gunzesrieder Tal, the “Alpvielfalt” themed trail is one of the recommended walks. The Käse-Kräuter-Sommer in Blaichach is a seasonal programme running from June 1 to September 30 and includes guided hikes and workshops. The summer dates and the ski trail’s changing snow and grooming conditions make the time of year an important consideration when choosing.

You can also visit the Heini Klopfer ski flying hill there; the tower lift takes you to the viewing platform on the ski jump tower. Its free-admission experience exhibition explores animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area.

From Immenstadt railway station, you can reach the nature park centre on foot in 30 minutes via the “Achis Wasserweg” themed trail. In bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. Check bus availability and journey times again before setting off; the centre’s opening arrangements may vary. The Allgäu Mountain Farming Museum in Immenstadt-Diepolz also has its own focus on local history: this interactive open-air museum documents the lives of Allgäu mountain farmers in historic buildings.

The Breitachklamm offers another way to experience nature in the wider Oberallgäu destination. Visitors can explore it on well-maintained, secured paths; trail conditions may vary by season. The Oberallgäu thus offers both natural and cultural attractions, each with its own focus, distinct from the attractions and trails in Blaichach.
