Danube Valley, sinkhole and trails

Fridingen is a member of the Upper Danube Nature Park. The Danube Valley is known as the “Swabian Grand Canyon.” One of the Danube’s main sink points lies near Fridingen in the middle of the valley, directly on the Danube Cycle Path toward Ziegelhütte. A dedicated information point there covers the subject of the Danube sinkhole. The sink point thus connects a natural phenomenon with practical orientation on the cycle path.

The Danube Cycle Path runs through Fridingen. At the Danube sinkhole, the appearance of the river can vary from day to day: In the area around Tuttlingen, the Danube sometimes carries a lot of water, is completely dry in various places, or has only a little water. What you see therefore depends on the current water conditions.

There are numerous local circular trails for hiking through the landscape of the Danube Gorge Valley. Another notable option is the DonauWelle Donaufelsen Tour, a certified premium hiking trail. In July 2026, it was once again certified as a premium hiking trail by the German Hiking Seal. The circular trails and the named premium route offer different ways to make hiking the focus of your stay.

Old town, houses and museums

Fridingen has a historic town center protected as a listed monument. In the middle of the old town stands Künstlerhaus Scharf Eck, one of the city’s oldest burgher houses. The year 1554 can be seen on its half-timbered gable. The upper floors house a museum dedicated to Hans Bucher (1929–2002), a landscape painter of the Danube Valley. Across three floors, visitors can learn about his life and work.

The Upper Danube Valley Museum reopened in Ifflinger Castle in 1987; the local history museum had already been founded in 1974. On the ground floor, in the former castle chapel, an exhibition documents the castles of the Upper Danube Valley. The town therefore brings together an artists’ house centered on a single painter and another museum devoted to a regional history topic.

The parish church of St. Martinus also preserves a specific work of art: its Baroque high altar painting depicts the “Mass of St. Martin” and was painted by Matthäus Zehender in 1690. In this way, the historic town center brings together architectural history and a dated work of religious art.

Theater, Fasnet and winter activities

The Steintäle natural theater is an open-air venue in a narrow rocky valley, largely left in its natural state, with 400 seats. The Fridingen cultural association stages an adult play and a children’s play there each year. Fridingen’s Fasnet carnival brings a different cultural note: Traditionally, it begins on the morning of “Schmotzige Duschdig” with the release of the schoolchildren and the carnival revellers’ takeover of the town hall. The customs include Fasnetkiechle, yeast-dough pastries traditionally stretched over the knee.

Winter sports options include the Antoni ski slope and, when there is enough snow, a cross-country ski trail maintained by the club on Kirchberg. The ski slope has runs of varying difficulty. They are accessible by drag lifts and platter lifts; a rope tow is also used during ski lessons. The ski hut is staffed by volunteers and offers a place to stop between or after runs. As operations depend on conditions and the schedule, it is a good idea to check the latest information before a winter visit.
