For a stay in Aldingen, two cycling tours and the Aldingen Museum offer specific points to help with planning. The Donaubergland cycling tour “Lemberger Höhenrausch” begins in the valley in Aldingen and leads to Lemberg near Gosheim. A Donaubikeland cycling tour of the same name is a circular route that passes through several towns and returns to Aldingen. The museum currently has no regular opening hours; visits are possible only by appointment via email.

Cycling tours with different routes

The challenging Donaubergland cycling tour “Lemberger Höhenrausch” starts in the valley in Aldingen and leads from there up to the Heuberg and Lemberg near Gosheim. Lemberg is considered the highest mountain in the Swabian Alb. The route as described therefore links a start in the valley with a destination on the Heuberg. When getting your bearings, these two points are especially helpful: Aldingen is the starting point, and Lemberg near Gosheim is the stated destination.

By contrast, the Donaubikeland cycling tour “Lemberger Höhenrausch” is described as a circular route. It passes through Aldingen, Denkingen, Gosheim, Wehingen, Deilingen, Schörzingen, Wilflingen and Frittlingen before returning to Aldingen. This distinguishes it from the tour to Lemberg in terms of the stated route format: here, the sequence of towns and the return to Aldingen help you find your way. The published route description was updated in 2022; check current route conditions before setting out.

When choosing between the two descriptions, the destination and route are therefore the main considerations: Lemberg near Gosheim is the named endpoint of the challenging tour, while the circular route passes through several towns and returns to Aldingen. No travel time or distance is needed to make this distinction.

Arrange a visit to the Aldingen Museum in advance

The Aldingen Museum currently has no regular opening hours and can be visited only by appointment via email at gemeinde@aldingen.de. Be sure to include getting in touch in your plans before scheduling a museum visit. The requirement for access differs from that of the cycling tours described: an appointment in advance is expressly required for a museum visit. If you would like to combine a museum visit with cycling, you can plan your museum inquiry alongside your choice of one of the two routes.

Regional context: the wider destination of Tuttlingen

The district in the wider destination of Tuttlingen covers 734.4 square kilometres. Its landscape includes the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Alb, parts of the Baar region and the valley of the Young Danube. The northern part of the district features juniper heaths and the 10-Tausender region, with ten mountains over 1,000 metres high. White limestone cliffs rise above the Danube Valley; the Danube Gorge and the volcanic crater Höwenegg are also among the district’s scenic highlights.

Another geological attraction in the Tuttlingen destination is the Mühlheim Rock Cave. In October 2022, it became the first cave in the Swabian Alb to be designated a Geopoint by the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb. The Danube Sinkhole between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen also cannot be summed up with one unchanging view: it can look different from day to day. At different locations, the Danube may carry a lot of water, be completely dry or carry only a little water.

Cycling and hiking trails in the Tuttlingen destination

For longer cycling stages, Mühlheim an der Donau is located directly on the International Danube Cycle Path. The route runs all the way to the Danube’s mouth at the Black Sea and can also be ridden in short stages. This offers a different way to plan a route from the two tours described in connection with Aldingen: the Danube Cycle Path is a long-distance cycling route whose stages can be planned individually.

The wider destination of Tuttlingen also offers hiking routes with different itineraries. The “Donauversinkung” premium hiking trail, part of the DonauWellen trails, runs between Tuttlingen-Möhringen and Immendingen; check current route conditions before setting out. The final section of the Albsteig leads via Rußberg, Bettelmannskeller and Nonnehöhle near Wurmlingen directly to Tuttlingen. The named endpoints and intermediate stops help distinguish these two routes.

Culture in the wider destination

The Neuhausen ob Eck Open-Air Museum features 25 historic buildings. They were dismantled at their original locations, moved to Neuhausen ob Eck and restored there to their original condition. This offers a specific cultural-history focus that differs from the cycling tours: the museum centres on historic buildings and their relocation. The Aldingen Museum remains a separate destination, and you must arrange an appointment in advance by email to visit it.
