Sigmaringen Between the Danube and the Castle Rock

Sigmaringen is located in the Upper Danube Nature Park on the edge of the Swabian Alb. Here, imposing cliffs and forests shape the landscape through which the Danube flows. The young river loops around the town and the castle rock—so the river and its rocky backdrop are as much a part of Sigmaringen’s image as the town’s history.

Hohenzollern Castle developed from a medieval fortress into a princely residence. Since 1535, it has been the seat of the Counts, and later the Princes, of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. The castle’s history also includes a private weapons collection of around 3,000 objects, considered one of the largest private collections in Europe. If you are planning a stay with a focus on history, this is a distinctive landmark connected to the town’s past.

Explore the Town’s History for Yourself

The “Stadtführung Sigmaringen” app offers an interactive historical experience for independent exploration. After downloading it, you can use its content offline; the texts are available in German, English, and French. Before your trip, check whether the app is currently available, and download the content in advance if you plan to use it. For visitors who prefer a guided tour, the Sigmaringen Tourist Information Office offers town and themed tours. It also provides information about sights, excursions, cycling and hiking trails, and leisure activities.

The weekly market is also part of the townscape: it takes place in the center, between the town hall and the castle. As market arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit. Its location between these two distinctive buildings makes the market a landmark in its own right in the town center, whether you are mainly exploring the town’s history or the surrounding trails.

Hiking and Trails Along the River

The five DonauFelsenLäufe are premium hiking trails, together comprising 52 kilometers of signposted circular routes through the Danube Valley, the Schmeien Valley, and the Lauchert Valley. One specific route with its own distinctive landscape is the Schmeiental Tour: it starts at Hohenzollern Castle and leads through the Schmeien Valley, across fields and meadows, and through forests before returning to Sigmaringen. So, alongside the network of trails as a whole, you can choose individual tours with clearly defined starting points.

Another trail option is the accessible Swing Trail. It follows the Danube for just under five kilometers and features twelve swings, a nature observation tower, and a restored stretch of the river. Riverside paths run near the Swing Trail. The Rose Trail offers a different focus: it leads through the old town to the Prinzengarten, a princely park in the town. The trails described here therefore differ in length and destination—from the riverside to a loop through valleys and forest to a route through the old town and into the park.

Cycling with Different Areas of Focus

Seven cycling tours run through the cycling region around Sigmaringen. Their difficulty levels range from family-friendly to fitness-oriented; the routes mostly have gentle gradients and pass through the Upper Danube Nature Park, the Danube Valley, and the valleys of the Fehla, Lauchert, and Schmeie rivers. When choosing a route, both its stated difficulty and the landscape along the way are relevant. The range covers more than one difficulty level, so it is worth choosing a tour that suits you.

The FlowPark complements the cycling tours with a dedicated area featuring North Shore sections, bridges, seesaws, and a pump track. Beginners can also use it without advanced riding skills. This offers a different cycling experience from the tours through the valleys: here, the focus is on the park’s features, while the tours take you through the landscape.

Practical Information for Your Stay

For excursions in the Danube Valley, the Naturpark-Express serves 22 stations and can carry more than 100 bicycles. If you are planning to include the train in your trip, check the timetable before travelling. When looking for a hotel in Sigmaringen, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: castle and town history, hiking trails, or cycling tours will lead to different day plans. This means that choosing your trip is also a decision about which aspects of Sigmaringen you would like to discover in more depth.
