With around 4,200 residents, Hohentengen is a small regional centre in the Lake Constance–Upper Swabia region. The town is also known by the colloquial name Göge. Churches and chapels shape the town’s history, alongside walking and cycling routes and viewpoints across the countryside. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hohentengen, these different highlights can help you plan your stay. You can tailor your visit to local history, outdoor activities or scenic views.

Churches, Chapels and Local History

St. Michael’s Church in Hohentengen was built between 1848 and 1852 in the neo-Gothic style, replacing an earlier church. This brings together two periods: a building from the mid-19th century and an older religious history at the same site. The term neo-Gothic describes a stylistic revival of Gothic forms, while the dates mark the period of construction. The Marienkapelle chapel on the Steige is more than 500 years old and was once a frequently visited place of pilgrimage. Commemorative plaques at the north entrance to the cemetery recall the 1799 meeting at Hohentengen.

Chapels, Routes and Viewpoints

All the chapels in the Göge area can be reached via well-maintained walking paths; some of these routes follow paved side roads. The municipal chapel tour includes several viewpoints. These offer different perspectives for planning your day: you can focus on the chapels as a local and cultural theme, and the viewpoints as a way to experience the landscape. The routes may change over time, so check local information on the route before setting out.

Cycling Routes of Different Lengths

A chapel cycling tour in Hohentengen is approximately 15.5 kilometres long. There is also a four-kilometre cycling tour that passes the Enzkofer Berg recreation area and a viewpoint at the reservoir. The chapel tour is therefore around 11.5 kilometres longer, which can help you choose the distance that suits you. Check the routes and conditions locally before setting off.

Hohentengen is considered a convenient base for excursions to the Danube Valley, across the Swabian Alb, to Lake Constance, the Allgäu and the Alps. This leaves you free to plan your stay around a range of destinations.
