In Illmensee, swimming facilities by the lake sit alongside several named trails and other leisure activities. The lido is in the center of town. When hiking, you can choose a route based on its lakeside course, approximate length, or the combination of two trails.

The lido and time by the water

Illmensee Lido has areas for swimmers and non-swimmers. Other facilities include boat hire, mini golf and a beach volleyball court. Spacious sunbathing lawns and a large adventure playground with water and sand play round out the options. The range of activities spans swimming, exercise on land and a break on the lawn. The lake is more than just a backdrop: the circular trail around Illmensee runs directly along the shore.

Hiking trails with different features

The “Uferrunde” glacial trail is approximately 4.5 km long. The “Kantenlauf” and “DerHöchste” glacial trails can be combined to form a premium hiking trail. This lets you choose your route based on different features: the circular trail’s direct lakeside course, the Uferrunde’s approximate length, or the combination of the two trails into a premium hiking trail. The route options in the associated municipality also include the 1 km-long Swabian-Alemannic Dialects Trail with its path of famous people.

More things to do in Illmensee

There is a boules court in front of the Drei-Seen-Halle, newly laid out in 2021. Fishing can also be combined with time on the water: you can hire a rowing boat for fishing on Illmensee. Check the current availability of rental boats before your trip. So, alongside the lido and hiking trails, boules and a rowing-boat trip are also options in their own right.

In the wider destination of Sigmaringen

Sigmaringen Castle is a destination in its own right within the wider Sigmaringen area. It developed from a medieval castle into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the town. Guided tours of the castle introduce almost 1,000 years of Hohenzollern family history. The castle also houses a private arms collection of about 3,000 objects. Its history, architecture and collection offer different perspectives on the same building.

Other buildings also offer insight into Sigmaringen’s history: the Round Tower was built as a defensive tower in the old town fortifications and was converted into a local history museum in 1970. The Heimatmuseum Runder Turm is open Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours before your visit, as they may change.

The five DonauFelsenLäufe premium hiking trails in Sigmaringen are another point of interest for hikers. They pass through the Danube Valley, the Schmeien Valley and the Lauchert Valley. Sigmaringen lies in the Upper Danube Nature Park on the edge of the Swabian Alb, where the Danube flows through a landscape characterized by imposing cliffs and forests. In the wider destination, the landscape themes described therefore include river valleys and cliffs, as well as the trails and lake in Illmensee.
