Lautenbach: Hiking, the Lautenfelsen Rocks and Local History
Accommodation in Lautenbach
Lautenbach offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: the trail to the Lautenfelsen Rocks, with its views and geological features; a church and festival history shaped by local traditions; and a small outdoor swimming pool. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether hiking, local history or time by the water will shape your stay.
Hiking and scenery around the Lautenfelsen Rocks
The circular trail to the Lautenfelsen Rocks is around 3.2 km long and climbs approximately 200 metres. It leads to the rocks at 610 m above sea level, which offer expansive views of the surrounding area. The ascent also opens up unobstructed views over Lautenbach and the lower Murg Valley.
The area around the Lautenfelsen Rocks is designated as a nature reserve. Its distinctive formations include the so-called “woolsack-weathered” granite boulders at the Lautenfelsen Rocks. They are around 300 million years old.
Another hiking route is the Gernsbach–Lautenbach stage, which is about 6.7 km long. These two figures describe different types of route: a circular trail to the Lautenfelsen Rocks and a stage whose endpoints are Gernsbach and Lautenbach.
Church history and a local holiday
Lautenbach observes its own annual holiday on 2 July, the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The holiday dates back to a vow and is therefore part of local history.
The present-day old church in the upper village was consecrated on 14 April 1818. Its predecessor chapel was destroyed in 1815 in a devastating fire that reduced most of the village to rubble and ashes. The sequence of destruction and later consecration places the church within the history of the village fire.
The small outdoor swimming pool
Another local option is a small outdoor swimming pool with views of the Lautenfelsen Rocks. The pool has sunbathing lawns and seating, as well as a shaded sandpit. There is also play equipment, a table tennis table, table football and a kickabout pitch. A kiosk is on site. Alongside hiking and history, this offers a dedicated space for spending time outdoors.
More to discover in the wider destination of Gernsbach
In the wider destination of Gernsbach, the art trail along the Reichenbach offers a different kind of hiking experience. The gently ascending trail is 3.2 km long and runs from the Gernsbach district of Obertsrot-Hilpertsau to Reichental. Works by well-known artists from Baden-WĂĽrttemberg and other European countries are displayed along the trail. The artworks are on loan from the artists and may remain there for varying lengths of time. For comparison, the circular trail to the Lautenfelsen Rocks is also around 3.2 km long, with an ascent of approximately 200 metres. This makes it possible to compare two similarly long trails with different themes.
Gernsbach’s cultural landscape also includes the Katz’sche Garten, a historic park on the banks of the Murg with numerous sculptures and works of art from past centuries. It also features a classicist garden house dating from 1846.
The Storchenturm has been part of Gernsbach’s townscape for over 500 years. A permanent exhibition was set up there in 2014, following renovations.
