Discover Litzelstetten: pile-dwelling history and trails
Accommodation in Litzelstetten
Litzelstetten brings together a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: the Litzelstetten-Krähenhorn pile-dwelling site offers a glimpse into early history, there are various cycling and hiking trails in and around the village, and the lido offers a connection to the lake. If you are looking for hotels in Litzelstetten, these highlights can help you decide what kind of stay you would like. There is also a separate camping option at the nature campsite.
Pile-dwelling history at Krähenhorn
Finds from the Litzelstetten-Krähenhorn pile-dwelling site date to the period between 3833 and 3805 BC. The site was selected as one of 111 sites for UNESCO World Heritage status. The dating and the selection describe different aspects: the former places the finds in time, while the latter identifies the site as part of this selection. The site's connection to the protected area also forms part of its setting: parts of the Litzelstetten-Krähenhorn settlement and its buffer zone lie within a nature reserve.
Church and long stretches of history
Another historical landmark is the Church of St Peter and Paul in Litzelstetten. It was certainly already in existence in the 13th century. Together with the much earlier pile-dwelling finds, it offers a broad historical perspective on the village: the two traces represent very different eras, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
Cycling and hiking trails
There are Lake Constance cycling routes, pilgrimage routes, European hiking trails and local circular walking trails in and around Litzelstetten. These include different kinds of excursions: cycling as well as various forms of walking. When planning, you can first choose your preferred activity before looking into the details of a specific route. The trail categories mentioned offer several ways to plan time outdoors.
Lido and getting there
Litzelstetten Lido has a beach volleyball court. The Litzelstetten/Purren stop is an important point of reference for getting there: buses on routes 4/13, 13/4 and 6 connect the stop with the lido. Check the current timetable for these routes before travelling. This lets you plan both a visit to the lido and your bus journey without confusing the different bus routes.
Nature camping as a separate accommodation option
The campsite is right on the shore of Lake Constance in a nature reserve, offers views of Mainau Island and is directly beside the Lake Constance Cycle Path. There is space for campervans up to 6 metres long, tents and glamping tents. The accommodation type is clear: you can consider camping and glamping if you are looking for an alternative to a hotel. Its location directly on the cycle path also links the campsite to one of the local themes mentioned above.
In the wider destination of Konstanz
The Lake Constance Museum of Natural History adds its own distinctive feature to the wider destination of Konstanz. It illustrates the formation of Lake Constance and its diverse habitats through exhibits of animals and informative models. There, visitors can get involved and explore through touchable animals, touch holes and animal calls at the push of a button. The museum is right on the lakeshore and just a few steps from the main railway station, the landing stage and the central bus stop.
Konstanz’s historical attractions offer another perspective. Niederburg is Konstanz’s oldest district, and the Imperia is a landmark visible from far away. A walk through the city takes in sights from the Imperia to the Konzil building. In the historic old town, picturesque little lanes invite you to browse the shops. As well as Litzelstetten’s local features, the wider destination offers its own city experience, with a museum, old town and history.
