Hohenfels: Moorland, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Hohenfels
Nature, trails and culture are the main reasons to visit Hohenfels. The Waltere Moor offers a distinctive landscape, local hiking trails pass named places and viewpoints, and the Lebensraum-Garten hosts a recurring cultural program. You can plan your stay around nature, outdoor activities or an event date.
Waltere Moor: Protected Landscape
The Waltere Moor nature reserve lies on the northwestern edge of the Hohenfels municipal district and borders the Schwackenreuter Seen nature reserve. It is situated in a shallow depression at an elevation of about 630 m above sea level. The area includes wet woodland, as well as smaller treeless marsh meadows and dry grassland areas. Covering about 95 hectares, the moor forms a larger landscape unit: around two-thirds lie within Hohenfels, with the remainder in the Sauldorf municipal district in the Sigmaringen district. Its varied habitats give the protected area its distinctive character, and it extends beyond the municipal boundary.
Culture at the Lebensraum-Garten and History
A series of events takes place every year during the summer months at the Lebensraum-Garten Hohenfels. The program includes concerts, readings, themed events and children’s theater, held either in the willow pavilion or outdoors. Individual event dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for your intended travel period.
Hohenfels Castle also has a clearly defined historical connection: a branch of Salem boarding school was housed there from 1931 to 2017. This former use, which took place over a specific period, is distinct from the garden’s recurring summer program of individual events.
Hiking Trails and Finding Your Way
The Hegau Way of St. James crosses the Hohenfels area, passes Sattelöse in Liggersdorf and heads southwest to Mindersdorf. There, it passes St. Laurentius and Oswald Parish Church and continues via Steig in Deutwang to Ursaul. The named stops and their order can help you find your way along the route. Check the route details before setting out.
The Meßkirch–Lake Constance long-distance hiking trail, maintained by the Black Forest Association and the Swabian Alb Association, is marked with a blue diamond. Another hiking route starts at the parking lot of the Hohenfels natural swimming pool in Kalkofen; at the edge of the forest, it offers a view of Hohenfels Castle and the Hegau landscape. The route descriptions use different waypoints: the blue diamond on the long-distance trail, places and a church on the Way of St. James, and the castle and landscape on the route from Kalkofen. You can choose between the tours based on whether you prefer trail markers, named stops or a viewpoint. Check route details and conditions before setting off.
On the southwestern edge of the lake district, at the boundary between the MĂĽhlingen and Hohenfels municipal districts, an information board and viewing platform offer an overview of the watershed and the lake district. Here, orientation and views come together in one place.
