Allensbach: Museums, Nature and Lake Constance
Accommodation in Allensbach
Allensbach combines literary culture and the archaeological history of the town with nature on Lake Constance. Local attractions include the MĂśHLENWEGMuseum, the Archaeology and Local History Museum, and a green classroom in the wildlife and leisure park. It also includes a stretch of Lake Constance between Allensbach and the island of Reichenau, where great crested grebes and grey herons are at home. Bus and train connections to nearby towns are also relevant when planning your trip.
Museums: Literature and Local History
The MÜHLENWEGMuseum features a permanent literary exhibition about Fritz Mühlenweg (1898–1961), the painter and award-winning writer. Photographs, paintings, exhibits, expedition films, and audio stations offer different ways to explore his work. The exhibition also includes unique loans from the family and from his estate. It thus brings together visual, film, and audio media.
Other formats complement this focus: a documentary featuring eyewitness accounts, as well as personal stories and memories from the Mühlenweg family’s circle, are available on loanable tablets. Stories and poems, a quiz, and a virtual tour of favorite pieces are also part of the offering. The museum therefore focuses not only on the exhibition, but also on personal memories and interactive elements.
The Allensbach Archaeology and Local History Museum traces the history of the town from the Neolithic period to the present day. It offers insights into the “Allensbach-Strandbad” pile-dwelling settlement and the lives of its Neolithic inhabitants. Many original finds come from the “Allensbach-Strandbad Pile-Dwelling UNESCO World Heritage Site”; these include two different sandals made from lime bast. The museum also displays a replica of the famous Allensbach dagger, made from Upper Italian flint and dating to around 2900 BC, with its wooden handle preserved.
The “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2011. The two museums offer a clear choice: the MÜHLENWEGMuseum focuses on one person and their literary milieu, while the Archaeology and Local History Museum spans a broad period of the town’s history.
Nature and Leisure in Allensbach
The Allensbach Wildlife and Leisure Park has a green classroom covering more than 1,000 m² and containing over 600 plants. Its features include a wild bee hotel, a rose garden, and a large herb spiral. Alongside the museum themes, this offers a distinct focus on plants and landscaped green spaces.
Another natural highlight is on Lake Constance: the stretch between the island of Reichenau and Allensbach is a habitat for great crested grebes and grey herons. Allensbach’s nature themes are therefore quite distinct: the plant life of the green classroom on the one hand, and an area of Lake Constance home to the bird species mentioned above on the other.
Dining and Cooking Together
Dining options at the wildlife park include self-service snacks in the wildlife park hall and barbecue areas. The Mindelsee country inn serves traditional German cuisine. Since dining options may change, it is best to check in advance if they are important to your plans.
A group cooking experience brings together seasonal and regional dishes from the Lake Constance region, made with local products, followed by a shared meal and a glass of Allensbach wine. The meeting place is the teaching kitchen at Allensbach Primary School, Schulstr. 12. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, check dates and availability in advance.
Getting Here by Bus and Train
Allensbach is connected by bus and train to nearby towns such as Konstanz and Radolfzell. For regional travel, the DB and SBB networks provide connections to Singen, Radolfzell, Konstanz, or Stein am Rhein. From there, the regional “Seehas” train or the Thurbo Lake Line runs every half hour to holiday destinations on the western shore of Lake Constance.
Allensbach’s transport links and the regional train connections answer different travel-planning questions: the bus and train service connects the town with nearby cities, while the half-hourly service describes regional connections to holiday destinations on the western shore of Lake Constance.
