Beilstein: Castle, Wine Trails and Annasee
Accommodation in Beilstein
When choosing a hotel in Beilstein, the focus of your trip can make all the difference: Hohenbeilstein Castle combines the “Langhans” keep with flight demonstrations by the resident falconry centre. Wine-growing and wine-and-literature trails offer different thematic experiences, while Annasee and the Steinbergweg add further landscape and scenic viewpoints. Consider which interests matter most for your stay: historic sights, wine-growing, hiking or cycling.
Hohenbeilstein Castle and Falconry
The 23-metre-high keep of Hohenbeilstein Castle is popularly known as “Langhans.” The resident falconry centre holds flight demonstrations at the castle. If you want to include a demonstration in your day’s plans, check the current programme before your visit. This lets you include the keep as a distinctive feature of the castle and the demonstrations as a separate visitor attraction in your plans.
Wine-Growing and Literary Stops
The wine education trail below Hohenbeilstein Castle was established in 2003 and features informative display boards. They provide information about organic wine-growing, fungus-resistant grape varieties and the history of wine-growing. The MB5 Wine and Literature Trail has a different focus: the circular route runs between Hohenbeilstein Castle and Wunnenstein and passes literary stops. Four of the 15 boards in total are along this section. The educational trail focuses on wine-growing, while the MB5 offers literary stops along the route.
The MB4 Wine and Literature Trail is different again: it includes a stop in Beilstein at the Hohenbeilstein Castle car park. An approximately 9 km hike also starts at this car park. Before setting out on the MB4, check the wayfinding and access; for the hike, it is advisable to check local route information before starting. The approximate distance gives you a basis for planning without specifying a walking time.
Annasee and Views from Steinbergweg
Annasee is a natural lake in Beilstein’s municipal forest. In 1951, it was entered on the landscape protection map as a protected part of the landscape. It attracts hikers and cyclists, and benches and fire pits invite visitors to linger. The lake therefore offers a different experience from the display boards on the wine education trail and the literary stops on the MB5.
The Steinbergweg above Beilstein’s old town offers a scenic viewpoint: from there, the view faces west towards Forstberg and Wunnenstein. Alongside routes with their different themes, you can therefore choose a specific viewpoint and two named destinations.
Vineyard Festival and Trip Planning
The Beilstein Vineyard Festival takes place every year from Friday to Monday on the weekend before the summer holidays in Baden-Württemberg. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the exact dates and programme before travelling, as both may change. This gives you a reason to coordinate your travel dates with the recurring festival period.
Heilbronn as a Wider Travel Destination
If you broaden your travel plans to include the wider destination of Heilbronn, you’ll find additional cycling and landscape-related options. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route is one of the cycling routes highlighted in Heilbronn district. The district has around 1,000 km of signposted circular day-tour routes in Kraichgau, Zabergäu, Weinsberger Tal and Schozach-Bottwartal. Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park encompasses 25 municipalities across four districts, including Heilbronn district. These regional details complement Beilstein’s specific destinations with a broader framework for planning your trip.
