Geislingen an der Steige – Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Geislingen an der Steige
Geislingen an der Steige offers two distinct ways to plan your trip: nature and trails, and local history and architecture. The Eybtal nature reserve, the Albtraufgänger long-distance trail and several historic sites provide specific themes for your stay. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can first decide whether to focus more on hiking and scenery or on cultural attractions.
Nature and Trails around Geislingen
The “Eybtal with parts of the Längen and Rohrachtal” nature reserve covers more than 1,300 hectares. It is the largest nature reserve in the Stuttgart administrative district, and a large part of it lies within the Geislingen municipal area. The protected landscape is therefore one of the area’s defining natural features, although the entire reserve does not lie within the city limits.
The Albtraufgänger, a long-distance hiking trail over 100 kilometres long, passes through Geislingen an der Steige and is designated both a Quality Trail and a “Leading Quality Trail.” If you are looking for a shorter excursion with a clearly described destination, consider the Ödenturm: it stands on a rocky spur high above the city, has stood for centuries and offers views of the Alb plateau and far across the Filstal valley. From Geislingen’s pedestrian zone, you can reach it on foot in about 45 minutes via the Albtraufgängerweg and a marked switchback trail. Before setting out, check the trail operator’s notices for possible diversions.
Getting Around by Train and Bike
The Eybtal nature reserve is accessible by train. From Geislingen station, marked hiking trails lead to Helfenstein Castle ruins and the Ă–denturm in just a few minutes. This gives you another starting point for planning hikes and visits to natural attractions.
The cycle routes listed for Geislingen include the Albtäler Radweg, the Albtraufroute, the Filstalroute and the Route der Industriekultur. The route names provide a first guide to choosing a route; check the current signposting and route status before setting off.
Local History and Architecture
The Alte Bau was built around 1445 as a granary and is considered a significant example of 15th- and 16th-century Alemannic or Gothic timber construction in southwest Germany. Today, the building houses the Geislingen City Museum and municipal art gallery. Architectural history and cultural institutions come together here in one place.
The present-day Protestant town church also reflects a long history: it was built between 1424 and 1428 and was once dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its former dedication adds a historical perspective to the church building’s present-day identity.
A themed trail with twelve stops uses engaging short texts to introduce aspects of the life and work of Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart (1739–1791). Schubart lived in Geislingen for six years, and the stops connect his biography with the town. A guided hike from the old town to castle ruins also takes visitors back to the Middle Ages and brings historical events of the period to life. Contact the town for booking details about this hike.
