The route is 7.7 kilometres long and starts at the Messelberg hiking car park. It follows narrow paths along the Alb escarpment for almost its entire length. The route description highlights natural deciduous forests, colourful flower meadows and panoramic views.

The main viewpoint is the prominent Weißjura rock summit of the Messelstein, at an altitude of 748 metres. The views from the Messelstein and Rötelstein are also among the highlights of the Löwenpfad. With a little luck, you may find ammonite fossils along the trail. This is a possibility, not something to expect on every walk.

Fasnet and events at the castle

Donzdorf’s Fasnet carnival is one of the highlights of the town’s annual programme; the grand parade on Shrove Sunday is a particular feature of the carnival season. Donzdorf is also known as “Little Paris” at this time. Another cultural event is PREMIO Donzdorf: the high-calibre competition to find the best pianist takes place in early September.

“Schloss.Garten.Genuss” takes place every two years on the third Sunday in June. The market for garden lovers, food enthusiasts and Sunday strollers is held in the castle park. The town festival takes place around the castle grounds; the open-air cinema offers an outdoor experience in the eastern castle courtyard, with the castle as its backdrop.
