Wiesensteig lies at the edge of the Alb Escarpment in a narrow valley. Forests and juniper heaths frame the valley slopes, which rise to 850 meters. In the town, the medieval center, the Helfenstein family’s architectural heritage and paths into the surrounding countryside come together. You can therefore focus your stay on historic architecture or make hiking trails, geology and outdoor activities the main focus.

Town History Between the Church and the Castle

The market fountain was built in 1718. Its Corinthian capital bears the town’s coat of arms, framed by the coats of arms of the Counts of Helfenstein and Fürstenberg. The twin-towered collegiate church of St. Cyriakus was built in the Gothic style in 1466 by Provost Johann, Count of Werdenberg. Inside, a Baroque chancel is paired with a Neoclassical nave. The church thus brings together Gothic architecture and two distinct styles of interior design.

The Helfenstein family’s residence castle was founded in 1551 by Count Ulrich XVII. It served as a residence until the extinction of the counts’ line in 1627. Other buildings also mark different periods in the town’s history: The Old Stable dates from 1562 and was originally a granary belonging to the castle. The ornate half-timbered building at Hauptstraße 39 dates from 1669. The cemetery chapel contains Renaissance frescoes and Baroque altars; it was restored in 1969. Together, these dates span from the collegiate church in 1466 to the market fountain in 1718.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Different highlights await hikers on the trails. The Löwenpfad Filsursprung-Runde is a named hiking trail in Wiesensteig. The Wiesensteig GEOPFAD leads along the Sommerberg to geological windows where rock from the Late Jurassic period is visible. One route’s name refers to a loop, while the other offers geological insights along the Sommerberg.

The Albtraufgängerweg leads to Wiesensteig, through the medieval town center and along a well-marked trail with views over the Wolfsklinge, before returning beneath the Papierfelsen to the Papiermühle parking lot. Its described route therefore connects the town center with a section of trail offering views over the Wolfsklinge.

There are also excursion destinations north of Wiesensteig. The Kreuzkapelle stands on the Alb plateau; a footpath lined with Stations of the Cross leads through a beech forest to the chapel. The ReuĂźenstein castle ruins lie five kilometers northwest of Wiesensteig. They can be reached on foot from the paid PapiermĂĽhle parking lot via the Bronnensteige and Feldkopf. The two destinations thus differ both in location and in the access routes described.

Cycling, Winter and Outdoor Pool

Two mountain biking routes are relevant when planning a cycling trip: The AlbCrossing passes by Wiesensteig, among other places; the Wiesensteiger Löwentrail Reußenstein-Runde is a named mountain biking route. According to the town, the Bläsiberg ski lifts in Wiesensteig make up the largest ski area on the Swabian Alb. The Wiesensteiger Tälesbad is an outdoor swimming pool. If you plan to visit, please check its current opening hours in advance.
