Aichelberg lies on the northern edge of the Swabian Jura and rises to 564 meters above sea level. The town combines a striking volcanic landscape with a viewpoint, a walnut nature trail and historical connections to the Counts of Aichelberg. Travel by road and bus may also be important for planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Aichelberg, compare these features with your planned arrival and the routes you intend to take.

Volcanic landscape on the Alb escarpment

Aichelberg and Turmberg are isolated former volcanic vents filled with basalt tuff, which shape the local landscape. The volcanic vent at Aichelberg documents activity of the Swabian Volcano during the Tertiary, around 11 to 17 million years ago. The outcrop has been designated a Geopoint since 2011. The dates refer to different things: 11 to 17 million years ago refers to volcanic activity, while 2011 marks the start of its designation as a Geopoint.

Views and nature trail

At Traufblicker, there is a panoramic information board and benches. From Aichelberg, the view extends to Stuttgart Airport on the Filder plain and the Stuttgart TV Tower. The viewpoint and information board offer a different focus for a visit than the geological outcrop. These facilities may change; if the board or benches are important to you, check their current status in advance.

The Nussbaum nature trail in Aichelberg introduces twelve different walnut varieties. The trail and its planting may change over time. If you plan to visit the trail specifically, take this variability into account when planning.

Historical traces

The Counts of Aichelberg are first documented around 1210. Around 1350, estates associated with them passed into the possession of the Counts of Württemberg. The two dates mark different historical points: the first documentation of the counts and a later transfer of ownership. This helps put the recorded history into context without equating the first mention with a founding date.

Getting there by bus and car

A bus route connects Aichelberg with Göppingen and Weilheim an der Teck. From the stop, it is about a five-minute walk to the trail’s starting point. Timetables and services may change; check the connection before traveling.
