Staufer History and Historic Buildings

Wäscherschloss is often referred to as the “Cradle of the Staufers.” The castle houses a small museum. The Amtshaus stands on the market square; it was built in 1588 by Imperial Baron Conrad IV of Rechberg zu Staufeneck and Hohenrechberg. Its main facade facing the market square features Renaissance half-timbering between two small corner turrets built as bay windows. The Way of the Cross in Wäschenbeuren was endowed in 1892 and comprises 14 station plaques. The Rathausbrunnen fountain in Wäschenbeuren was designed in 1992 by the artist Kurt Grabert.

Hiking Trails, Cycling Route and Orchard Meadows

The Löwenpfad Staufer-Runde between Göppingen and Wäschenbeuren is a circular trail certified by the German Hiking Association in the “Cultural Experience” category. The approximately 11.2-kilometre loop starts at the Wäscherschloss hiking car park in Wäschenbeuren. This gives the route a circular layout, a specific starting point and an approximate distance. Another historical connection is found on the Jubiläumsweg: it was established in 2002 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Wäschenbeuren branch of the Swabian Alb Association. The Staufer-Runde is categorized as a “Cultural Experience,” while the Jubiläumsweg refers to the local branch and its history.

There is also an extensive network of hiking trails and cycling routes around Wäschenbeuren. A regional cycling route runs through the Wäschenbeuren municipal area from Göppingen via Wäschenbeuren to Schwäbisch Gmünd. The Marbachtal loop offers a different perspective on nature: it passes through orchard meadows that provide habitats for endangered species of animals and plants, such as woodpeckers and bats. For choosing a hiking theme, the Staufer-Runde offers a cultural context and an approximate distance; the Marbachtal loop focuses on orchard meadows as a habitat. Across the wider destination of Göppingen, the Löwenpfade range from 3 to 24 kilometres; at approximately 11.2 kilometres, the Staufer-Runde falls within this range.
