Reichenbach an der Fils can be explored through a range of interests: exercise in the forest, swimming, nature experiences and a tangible trace of the town’s history in the Reichenbach steam engine. When planning your stay, you can weigh up outdoor activities, a visit to the outdoor pool and a historical topic. Train connections and station-based car sharing are also practical considerations you can take into account before choosing a hotel.

Forest and exercise

A large part of Reichenbach’s municipal area is forest. The municipal forest offers opportunities for hiking, jogging, cycling and walking. The Schurwald is another recreational area for visitors to Reichenbach. In the district of Esslingen, the Schurwald has almost level high-altitude hiking trails with views of the Swabian Alb, the Filder plain, the Three Imperial Mountains, the Berglen hills and the Welzheimer Forest. This regional perspective complements activities in the municipal forest: during your stay, you can enjoy both exercise in the forest and the scenery of the Schurwald.

Outdoor activities and the outdoor pool

The adventure trail features a walk-in beaver lodge, a duck’s nest and balance elements. The renaturalized Lützelbach is a natural recreation area for families, children and people seeking relaxation. Before visiting, check the latest municipal information about these two attractions.

The outdoor pool in a green setting has a combined swimming and non-swimming pool, with three 50-metre lanes and five 25-metre lanes. Other facilities include sunbathing lawns, table tennis, beach volleyball and a trampoline for children and teenagers. A wide water slide, a water mushroom and water jets add to the aquatic attractions. There is a stainless-steel pool in a parent-and-child area for small children; the outdoor pool also has a fountain area with water jets.

Local history and the steam engine

The first documented mention of Reichenbach dates back to 1268. A later chapter in its technological history is the Reichenbach steam engine, built by G. Kuhn in Stuttgart-Berg in 1891. It was in use at the Kantenwein factory until 1977, where it was used to produce soap powder, shoe polish, floor oils and cleaning products. It is the last of more than a dozen machines once used in businesses in Reichenbach. After its restoration, it was presented to the public in 1996; it can be set in motion by inserting a coin. The first documented mention and the steam engine thus bring different periods of the town’s history into view.
