Leinfelden-Echterdingen offers a range of ways to explore, from outdoor trails to historic sites and event venues.

Hiking, Cycling and Landscapes

Leinfelden-Echterdingen is located near Schönbuch Nature Park. One named cycling route is the FilderRadRunde: it is about 57 kilometers long and passes through fields, forests, orchards and villages. Along the way, there are views towards the Neckar Valley and the Swabian Alb. The approximate route length and the landscapes described give a clear idea of what this cycling tour focuses on.

For hiking, the circular trail network includes 18 routes that start and end at designated hiking car parks. Information boards at six hiking car parks in the town provide an overview of the available routes. There is also a long-distance hiking trail in the SiebenmĂĽhlental valley. Separately, the former railway line from Musberg to Waldenbuch can be used for hiking, cycling and skating.

Another way to discover local and landscape history outdoors is the approximately three-kilometer historic educational trail through Echterdingen town forest. Ten information boards cover archaeology, geology, local history and forest history. The trail brings several topics together along a single route, while the circular hiking trails offer a wider choice of loops.

Mills, Museums and Culture

The historic mills of the SiebenmĂĽhlental valley are located in the Reichenbach valley, on the southwestern edge of the Filder plain. Five historic mill businesses in the valley are operating and offer Swabian home-style cooking as well as Greek specialties. As individual businesses and their offerings may change, check the latest information before planning a restaurant visit.

At the Mäulesmühle, the Kulturscheuer presents comedy, cabaret, live music and Swabian dialect performances. The program may change; check the latest dates for a specific event. The mill museum at the Mäulesmühle documents the milling trade and contains a fully functional milling mechanism dating from 1819.

The town’s history is also explored at several locations. The Stadtmuseum LE presents special exhibitions on the history of the town and its districts each year, complemented by talks, discussions, films and festivals. A 30-minute guided tour covers the history of the town’s districts and the distinctive character of the Filder region. Specific exhibitions and programs change.

Leinfelder Haus is a farmhouse dating from 1570 that now houses a local history museum. Its topics include shoemaking, carpentry and the early Bosch industry. Architectural and artistic monuments can also be seen throughout the town. The cultural program includes visual arts, music, dance, theater and cabaret.

Historic Trails and Aviation History

The two local history trails have different focuses. The Echterdingen Historic Trail is a circular route through the town center: it starts at the 16th-century town hall and passes 28 notable sights. The Leinfelden Historic Trail explains the town’s history with twelve information boards. Together with the educational trail in Echterdingen town forest, they offer different ways to explore local history—as a loop through the town center, via boards along a trail, or through themed stops in the forest.

Echterdingen is also associated with the landing of Count Zeppelin’s airship LZ 4 in 1908 and its subsequent destruction by a storm. The aviation exhibition at the Stadtmuseum LE recalls the landing and gives an impression of the present-day airport. It thus touches on both a historic event and the town’s connection to the airport.
