Filderstadt combines nature trails with local history, art, and recurring events. The city is located on the scenic Filder Plain, right by the airport and 17 kilometres south of Stuttgart city centre. It is connected to Stuttgart’s S-Bahn network, making it quick to reach by train. As timetables can change, it is worth checking current connections for your travel date. There are also nearby recreational areas with extensive hiking opportunities. When planning, you can therefore choose between nature destinations, historic sites, and an event date.

Nature spots and views

Bärensee lies on the edge of the Schönbuch forest in Filderstadt-Plattenhardt. It is a popular destination for enjoying the peace of nature; a small wooded island sits in the middle of the lake. The area is also well suited to a walk around the lake. Here, both exercise by the water and a distinctive landscape feature take centre stage.

The Drei Linden viewpoint, north of Filderstadt-Harthausen, offers a different perspective. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views over Filderstadt; the viewpoint is accessible on foot or by bicycle. The Three Linden trees were planted as peace trees after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. Filderstadt’s natural monuments also contribute to its natural character: they serve nature conservation, landscape management, and recreation in the open countryside.

History and art in the districts

The FilderStadtMuseum is located in the historic centre of Filderstadt-Bonlanden, at Klingenstraße 19. It is housed in Bonlanden’s former town hall, which dates back to 1563. Through objects, texts, and images, the museum presents the history of Filderstadt’s five districts. Its scope therefore extends beyond Bonlanden to cover the districts as a whole.

The Historic Trail offers another way to explore the city’s history: it passes through all five districts and includes 80 stops in total. While the museum is based at one location in Bonlanden, the trail extends across the entire city. Also in Filderstadt-Bonlanden, the Municipal Gallery regularly presents changing art exhibitions. The cultural focuses are distinct: the museum explores Filderstadt’s history, while the gallery showcases changing art.

A recurring event in Bernhausen

The Bernhausen Horse Market takes place in Bernhausen on the first weekend of March each year. The city organises it together with local clubs and organisations. If this event is the reason for your trip, check the specific date for the relevant year before making plans. The first weekend of March gives you the recurring timeframe, while the exact date each year remains important for planning.

Filderstadt can thus be explored from different perspectives: at Bärensee, a walk in nature takes centre stage; Drei Linden combines a view with a story of historic planting; and the museum, trail, and gallery each offer different perspectives on history and art. Stuttgart’s S-Bahn connections can also help with your travel planning; check the timetable for your travel date when looking up specific connections.
