Plattenhardt brings together traces of local history, natural monuments, a weekly market, and paths through the surrounding area. To get your bearings, it is worth exploring the different themes: historic building phases at the Antholianus Church, evidence from several centuries, and the Serigraphy Museum offer a different focus from a walk by Bärensee or a trip to Uhlberg Tower.

Church and Historic Traces

The Evangelical Antholianus Church preserves the remains of the foundations of two predecessor churches. The choir and sacristy belong to a hall church built around 1480 in the Late Gothic style; the nave was constructed in 1521. These details reveal the building’s different phases of construction. The church is also stop 4 on the Plattenhardt Historical Trail.

Other historical traces are found in various locations. The Pfarrhaus well is a stone well trough dating from 1723 and is considered the oldest preserved well in the Filder region. The community bakehouse in Plattenhardt was built in 1844 and renovated by the Plattenhardt association network in 1982. The former castle of the Lords of Plattenhardt stood at the corner of Römerstraße and Panoramastraße; remains of the castle moat are still visible. The stone crosses on Mörikestraße are atonement crosses or memorial stones from the 15th century.

Archaeological and biographical connections reach far back in time and also point to the history of the town: around 20 Celtic burial mounds can still be seen in Weilerhau. They were created around 500 BC. A memorial commemorates Jacob Brodbeck, an aviation pioneer born in Plattenhardt. Here you will encounter different forms of remembrance, from visible burial mounds and castle moat remains to the memorial.

Serigraphy Museum: Collection and Workshop

The Filderstadt Serigraphy Museum is located in part of the former Mack & Schneider hosiery factory in the district of Plattenhardt. It is based on the “Domberger Collection – A Screen Printing Collection of the State of Baden-Württemberg.” The museum therefore focuses both on the history of the building and on the screen-printing collection. In the museum workshop, visitors can screen-print a colorful design onto a postcard. If you plan to take part in this activity, check before your visit whether it is currently being offered.

Natural Monuments and Trails

Bärensee in Plattenhardt is a protected natural monument. The Peace Lime Tree in Weilerhau is also designated as a natural monument. These two places give nature in Plattenhardt a different focus from the town’s buildings and history: here, protected natural features take center stage. The paths from Uhlberg lead through the Schaichtal valley to Schönbuch Nature Park.

A helpful timing reference for planning is the kiosk at Uhlberg Tower: it can be reached on foot from the Plattenhardt hiking car park in about 20 minutes. This is an approximate time and may vary depending on trail conditions. The kiosk serves hot and cold drinks as well as regional specialties. Opening hours and refreshments may change; check the latest information before your visit.

Weekly Market at the Town Hall

The weekly market in Plattenhardt takes place in front of the town hall on Saturdays and offers fresh regional and seasonal produce. The fixed day of the week is the key detail for planning; individual vendors may change. This makes a visit to the market different from the historic sites and natural areas: it takes place on Saturdays, while the wells, church, and natural monuments reflect the town’s history and natural environment.
