Dobel: Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Local History
Accommodation in Dobel
Explore Dobel via themed hiking trails, cycling routes and cross-country ski trails with varying levels of difficulty. The town’s history also offers several points of interest. When planning, it is worth first considering the activities you want to enjoy and, for winter activities, the snow conditions.
Discover Hiking Trails and Geology
The forest history adventure trail is a 5 km family-friendly circular route. It starts at the edge of the forest; along the way, information boards, a prize draw and play features accompany the hike. You can take in the rocks, trees and plants along the trail, and four adventure features add to the experience for children.
The 6 km GeoTour Dobel offers a geological perspective. Puzzles and an information booklet lead to the Volzemer Steine and provide information about rocks and geology. The start and finish are at the Dreimarkstein hiking car park near Dobel. The Engel-Weg-Dobel, the Forest History Adventure Trail, Annis-Abenteuerweg Dobel and the Westweg also lead to the Volzemer Steine. Dobel is also the Westweg’s first stage destination.
Choose Cycling Routes by Distance
The Kleine Mannenbach-Schabhausen Loop is an easy 19.5 km circular cycling route. It passes Pfützenhäusle, loops around Reischacher Berg, heads to Eyachmühle and returns to Dobel via Dreimarkstein and Bad Herrenalb-Neusatz.
The Rund um Dobel circular cycling route covers 32.1 km. It winds through forests, past a small pond and along valley meadows. It briefly passes through the town of Bad Herrenalb, then continues via Weithäusle, with views into the Eyach Valley, to Dobel. Comparing the routes can help with planning: the shorter loop is classified as easy, while Rund um Dobel is just over 12 km longer and offers further scenery. Check the route details before setting off.
If you would like to ride in a group, consider the Dobel branch of the Black Forest Association’s cycling group: it meets every Monday from April to October. Together, the group explores the area around Dobel by bike. Confirm the dates directly with the association before taking part.
Cross-Country Skiing When Snow Conditions Allow
Dobel has three groomed meadow loop trails, each about 2 km long. Their short loops and gentle climbs make them particularly suitable for beginners. One of the three forest trails is the approximately 3.5 km Zäunle trail, which is groomed when there is enough snow and is also suitable for cross-country skiing beginners. The Hummelstein trail is about 5 km long and intended for intermediate skiers; the 6.2 km Klötzbucke trail is for experienced cross-country skiers.
The options range from short, gentle loops to longer trails for different experience levels. Trail operation depends on the snow conditions. Check current conditions before setting off.
Water Tower and Local History
The former Dobel water tower was built in 1937 and once supplied water to the higher-lying parts of the town. Today, it is an observation tower with sweeping views in every direction. On clear days, the panorama stretches from the Vosges to the Odenwald. If you plan to visit the tower, check current visitor information beforehand.
The Marienkapelle (St Mary’s Chapel) is also part of the town’s history: it was built and consecrated around 1460. Only a few fragments with Late Gothic stylistic features remain. The present-day church was built in 1744 to replace the dilapidated little chapel.
