If you’re looking for a hotel in Schelingen, it can help to first decide what kind of trip you’re after: should the focus be on the landscape and hiking, viticulture, or the wider cultural context? Schelingen combines vineyards and orchards with hiking trails and a striking viewpoint. These different themes offer a practical guide for your stay.

Schelingen Among Vineyards and Hiking Trails

Schelingen’s landscape combines orchards and vineyards with the wooded heights of Katharinenberg and Badberg, as well as the open Schelinger Matten. On walks and hikes, the landscape shifts between open spaces, wooded ridges, and cultivated land. The area is also home to diverse flora and fauna and geological features. If you enjoy exploring on foot, you’ll find more here than a single viewpoint: the landscape reveals different sides of the Kaiserstuhl.

The Schelinger Höhe parking area is considered a starting point for hikes in every direction across the Kaiserstuhl. Nearby Badberg is home to a nature reserve of around 42 hectares on its open summit slopes. This brings together hiking guidance and a protected landscape area; both can help you choose Schelingen for its nature and hiking themes.

Wine Views and the Path to Schelinger Kreuz

Viticulture is part of Schelingen’s local character: its vineyards produce local wines, and the Schelinger Kirchberg enjoys a strong reputation among experts as a wine-growing site. Another useful landmark is the Schelinger Kreuz between Schelingen and Altvogtsburg. It is one of Vogtsburg’s wine viewpoints and represents the connection between regional wine and panoramic views.

The route to Schelinger Kreuz leads from Schelingen’s sundial via Allmendgasse and a marked farm track to the viewpoint. Public parking areas on Allmendgasse and at Bahlinger Eck are useful landmarks for this route; Schelingen Weihergarten is also associated with the viewpoint.

Regional Context: Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl

In the wider destination of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, other named places add to the range of themes. Near Achkarren, the BĂĽchsenberg nature reserve has a woodland and nature trail. Its botanical features include dittany and downy oak. Also in Achkarren, the 3.6-kilometer Achkarrer Schlossbergpfad trail crosses the Schlossberg vineyard site. Together with the KaiserstĂĽhler Wine Museum in the center of Achkarren, it offers insights into the soil, climate, grape varieties, and history of viticulture on the Kaiserstuhl.

In Niederrotweil, St. Michael’s Catholic fortified church houses the Virgin Mary altar by Master HL. Created between 1516 and 1520, the work is considered a masterpiece of German woodcarving. The Baden Way of St. James also passes the church, where pilgrims can receive a pilgrim’s stamp. Art history and pilgrimage are thus two different ways to experience this place in its regional context.

Burkheim adds historic architecture and a cultural tradition to the picture. Its historic, listed Mittelstädtle district includes burgher and half-timbered houses, the town hall, and the town gate. During his tour through Burkheim’s lanes, the night watchman sings a night-watchman’s song in Alemannic. Together with the nature and viticulture themes of other places, this broadens the regional perspective beyond Schelingen’s own highlights.
