Ihringen: Wine-Growing History, Trails and Art in the Village

Wine-Growing and History in Ihringen

Wine was already being grown in Ihringen in 962; at that time, the town was already an important wine-growing community. The first documented mention of the town as “Uringa” dates from the same year. Wine-growing and local history have thus been connected since an early recorded date.

The Freiburg State Winery offers groups wine tastings combined with a tour of the Blankenhornsberg estate in Ihringen and the neighboring vineyards. Advance arrangements are required. Kaiserstühler Winzer Ihringen eG also offers group wine tastings; cellar tours and events are available on request.

Trails with Different Time Requirements

There are two trails for families, with different distances and walking times. The Wendelin Wiedehopf Trail runs through the vineyards, is 2 km long and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The Hummel Herta Trail runs through orchards and is shorter, at 1.2 km and about an hour. It follows the cycle path directly and is suitable for families and bicycles. The approximate times can help you plan how long to allow for these two routes.

The Panorama Trail offers a longer hike: it is 6.5 km long, takes about 3.5 hours and starts at the car park at the Kaiserstuhlhalle in Ihringen. The trail goes over the Schmerberg and past Hintere and Vordere Eck, ending at the start of Stalleckgasse. The Kaiserstuhl Trail follows largely unspoiled paths through vineyards, deciduous forests, loess ravines and nature reserves; the route ends in Ihringen.

For a day trip, the 64 km Kaiserstuhl Cycling Trail is described. It starts in Ihringen, passes through several towns and ends back there. This means that, alongside shorter trails with stated walking times, there is also a longer hiking route and a full-day cycling loop.

Nature, Exhibition and Views

The Kaiserstuhl Nature Centre, run by the Schwarzwaldverein e.V., is located next to Ihringen Town Hall. Its compact exhibition covers the Kaiserstuhl’s nature and geology and includes a terrain model and a reading and discovery corner for children. From March to November, the centre also offers excursions to notable landscape and natural features, including orchids, ravines and volcanic activity. If you are planning a specific excursion, check the dates in advance.

Lenzenberg is Ihringen’s natural viewpoint. From there, you can see the Tuniberg, the Belchen, the Blauen with its distinctive tower, and the Schönberg, among other places. On a clear day, the view reaches as far as the Swiss Jura; to the west, you can see the Vosges.

The fragrance and herb garden is in the Schlupf, in the heart of Ihringen. Access is via Riedengartenstraße 4, through a small alley, or from Vogelgasse via a footpath.

Art Trail and Local Traditions

Opened in June 2026, the Ihringen Art Trail runs through the village along Riedengartenstraße. Artists from Ihringen display their works at several locations. Ihringen’s traditional Harvest Thanksgiving festival includes a customary procession in which the winegrowers take part.

Getting to the Kaiserstuhl Trail

If you would like to hike the Kaiserstuhl Trail from Endingen to Ihringen, you can take the S1 from Freiburg to Breisach as far as Gottenheim or Breisach, then change to a service towards Endingen.
