Glottertal lies on the western edge of the Black Forest, 14 kilometres from the university city of Freiburg. The municipality stretches from the western entrance to the valley at 280 metres above sea level to the 1,243-metre-high Kandelberg. Grapes have been grown here for centuries at the foot of the Black Forest mountains. On the southern slopes of the foothills of Kandelberg, the vineyards are among the steepest and highest in Germany; viticulture there extends to 500 metres above sea level. The valley, the Black Forest slopes and viticulture together shape the landscape.

Hiking trails and the Glottertal Discovery Trail

Glottertal has 100 kilometres of marked hiking trails. One themed way to explore the area is the Glottertal Discovery Trail, which runs around the village. A dedicated trail marker identifies the route. Along the way, numerous illustrated information boards, with special texts for children too, provide information about the surrounding area. The main trail is 6.5 kilometres long, is suitable for families with young children and is easy to navigate with a pushchair.

Viticulture, sanatorium history and mining

The vineyard variation of the Discovery Trail leads through the vines of Eichberg and the “Roter Bur” vineyard site, the heart of Glottertal’s wine-growing area. It offers views across the valley and provides interesting facts about Glottertal wine. Those interested in the history of Glotterbad can find three themed information boards along the Glotterbad variation. The route leads to the origins of the historic Glotterbad sanatorium; the boards provide information about its eventful history from the 15th century to the present day. The Urgraben variation focuses on mining in Glottertal and the “Urgraben” technical monument. It is a short circular hike of just under eight kilometres.
