Gärtringen: Culture, Mills and the Schönbuch
Accommodation in Gärtringen
Gärtringen combines architectural and industrial history with cultural offerings and opportunities for hiking, cycling and swimming. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose from a range of interests, such as St. Veit’s Church, the museum complex in the district of Rohrau or trails in Schönbuch Nature Park. S-Bahn connections and guided cycling tours can also help you find your way around the area.
Church and Mill History
St. Veit’s Church acquired its present appearance between 1485 and 1500. Remains of the defensive wall have been preserved. Based on its overall layout and, in particular, the shape of its tower, the church can be classified as a fortified church. This cautious classification is part of its architectural history: it is based on the combination of the layout and the distinctive tower shape.
In Gärtringen’s district of Rohrau, the plaster and sand mill, built in 1799, tells the story of local milling. It became a small museum and was officially inaugurated in March 1988. The historic forge next to the sand mill and the mill itself form a joint museum complex that can be visited as one. The mill and forge are therefore not just separate historic sites standing side by side, but can be experienced together.
Every year on Whit Monday, the sand mill takes part in German Mill Day. It is open that day; at a “Mühlenhocketse” gathering, you can see sand being milled live under original conditions from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the event date for your travel dates.
Exhibitions and Cultural Events
An exhibition at Villa Schwalbenhof commemorates Friedrich Sieburg (1893–1964). The faithfully preserved rooms where he lived illustrate his life and work. The same villa hosts the municipal cultural series “Culture at the Villa,” featuring cabaret, music, literature, theater and children’s theater. These different genres give you several reasons to check the current program for your travel dates; be sure to check specific event dates in advance.
Another recurring event is “Jazz in the Park”: it takes place every year on the Sunday before the summer holidays at Kieferpark. The Hardt Stompers perform a jazz matinée there. For planning the timing of your visit, the date listed in the event calendar for that year is decisive.
Hiking and Cycling
A hiking trail in Gärtringen’s district of Rohrau follows the particularly romantic Jägerpfad (Hunter’s Trail) through Schönbuch, passing through the approximately 156 km² Schönbuch Nature Park. The Schwarzwaldverein Gärtringen e. V. also recommends three circular hikes in Gärtringen. These details offer different starting points for planning your hike: the trail along the Jägerpfad or one of the suggested circular routes. Check the current route information before choosing a trail.
There are also options for planning a bike ride: signposted cycle routes start at Gärtringen S-Bahn station and lead to surrounding communities as well as to Herrenberg and Böblingen. The ADFC also regularly offers guided bike tours starting and ending in Gärtringen. The dates of individual tours depend on the ADFC program.
Swimming and Camel Rides
Gärtringen’s outdoor swimming pool has a 50-meter swimming pool, 1- to 3-meter diving platforms, a water slide, a large shaded sunbathing lawn and a sun deck. The pool offers a range of very different activities, from swimming, diving and sliding to relaxing on the sunbathing lawn. The Kameloase offers one-hour camel rides through the countryside as well as introductory rides. As booking arrangements may change, check the conditions for your preferred date in advance.
Getting There and Choosing a Hotel
Line S1 of the Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association runs from Gärtringen station every half hour, and every 15 minutes during peak hours. It runs directly toward Böblingen, Stuttgart and Kirchheim/Teck, as well as toward Herrenberg. Check the current timetable for specific journeys.
Whether you would like to focus your stay on the church and mill complex, an event or activities in the Schönbuch, these highlights will help you plan a trip around your interests. Search for a hotel in Gärtringen and choose one based on the experiences that matter to you during your stay.
