Discover Tourves
Accommodation in Tourves
Tourves combines cultural history with outdoor experiences that can be explored in different ways: the Musée des Gueules Rouges is dedicated to bauxite mining in the Var department, while the Étang de Tourves and paths through the village and surrounding woodland offer other perspectives on the area. There are also buildings with specific dates and park remains whose architecture is interpreted with caution. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between visiting the museum, viewing historic monuments and spending time outdoors.
Mining history at the Musée des Gueules Rouges
The Musée des Gueules Rouges traces the history of bauxite mining in the Var department through a playfully designed visitor route. Interactive terminals also explain the origins of bauxite. At the museum, you can encounter both the history of mining and the material itself in different formats. A reconstructed mine gallery adds a vivid glimpse into the mining process. It can be visited with a guide; check separately whether a guided tour is available during your visit. You should also check seasonal opening hours in advance so you can plan your museum visit accordingly.
Buildings and historical context
The Fontaine Place de l’Hôtel de Ville dates from 1799 and was designated a Monument historique in 1926. By contrast, the bridge known as the Pont Romain on the Tourves side dates back to the 15th century and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1937. These dates offer a comparison across time: for both structures, their construction and later designation as a Monument historique occurred at different times. Despite its name, the stated construction date of the Pont Romain—the 15th century—is the one to go by.
The ruins of the Château de Valbelle in Tourves are attributed to Omer de Valbelle (1729–1778). The monumental remains of the park are believed to be the work of Charles de Wailly. This presents two different kinds of attribution: a named attribution for the ruins and an explicitly tentative architectural interpretation of the park remains.
Wetland and nature
The Étang de Tourves wetland lies close to the village of Tourves. It consists of three small depressions that hold water year-round. The Étang has ZNIEFF status, meaning it is an area of ecological, faunal and floral interest. As regulations can change, check them before your visit. A path from the car park leads to the banks of the Étang; you should also check for any local restrictions in advance.
Walks and hiking route
The “À la découverte du village” walk leads through the village lanes and along woodland paths to explore Tourves’ heritage. It combines paths through the village with sections in the woods. Another option is Les Oratoires de Saint-Probace: this circular hiking route is 7.4 km long and starts in Tourves. If you are planning time on foot, the stated distance provides a specific point of reference for this loop; no walking time or difficulty level is specified. The two routes have different focuses: the village walk goes through lanes and woodland paths, while Les Oratoires de Saint-Probace is described as a circular route with a known distance.
