Bagnols-En-Forêt: Forest, Views and Culture
Accommodation in Bagnols-En-Forêt
Bagnols-en-Forêt combines extensive woodland with viewpoints and traces of local and cultural history. If you are looking for a hotel in Bagnols-en-Forêt, you can make your choice based on what you want your stay to focus on: nature, archaeological themes or historic sites. The municipality offers a range of ways to explore these interests—from panoramic views and millstone sites to the attractions of CAREX.
Forest and Panoramic Views
Bagnols-en-Forêt is surrounded by 3,500 hectares of forest, where oak, pine and chestnut trees grow. This forest forms the broader landscape setting for the village. A specific viewpoint is the Table d’Orientation on the heights above the village: it is set on a natural promontory and offers an outstanding panorama over the eastern part of the Var department. The forest surroundings and the far-reaching view thus offer two distinct perspectives on the landscape.
Millstones and Their Sites
The history of millstones is also closely linked to the municipality. The area around Bagnols-en-Forêt contains three significant sites; La Forteresse is the easiest to access. The site yielded millstones made from amaranth-coloured rhyolite from the Estérel. They measure between 90 and 160 centimetres in diameter and between 15 and 50 centimetres thick. The stones were intended for regional oil and grain mills.
The dimensions give a sense of the size of these objects, while the material identifies their geological origin. At the same time, their intended use points to two distinct branches of regional milling: oil processing and grain milling. The site can therefore be understood through both the stone and the dimensions, as well as the purpose of the millstones.
Churches and Historical Heritage
The Église Paroissiale de St Antonin was built between 1704 and 1707 on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to St Antonin. The sequence of chapel and church is central to the history of this building. The Chapelle Saint-Denis preserves a different form of heritage: its old frescoes depict the history of the municipality of Bagnols-en-Forêt and the figure of Saint-Domnin. The building history and the subjects of the frescoes thus highlight different aspects of the local cultural history.
Rock Art, Evolution and Archaeology
CAREX Roc-Art turns the focus beyond the municipality. It presents the diversity of rock art across five continents, spanning a period of 50,000 years. It also invites visitors to contribute to a shared, living work. The focus here is both the international breadth of rock art and the opportunity to take part.
The CAREX Evolution Labyrinth focuses on a different timescale. Set amid natural vegetation, it takes visitors seven million years back in time, placing them in the role of Pierolapithecus—a common ancestor of humans and several living great apes. CAREX’s archaeological walks, in turn, make it possible to discover archaeology in a natural setting. CAREX’s themes therefore offer different ways to explore: rock art, an evolutionary perspective on time and archaeology in the natural landscape.
