Garéoult combines historic landmarks with plenty of reasons to visit, including religious buildings and local traditions, as well as a marked hiking route, a bike park and a weekly market. When choosing a hotel in Garéoult, your planned activities can be a helpful guide. The places and visiting arrangements below can help you plan your stay.

Church, Chapel and Local History

Garéoult’s church was built and consecrated in 1048 under the patronage of Notre-Dame, also known as Sainte-Marie. Inside are a copy of Titian’s “Entombment of Christ” and a Baroque altarpiece dedicated to Saint-Eloi. The Saint-Félix Chapel was built in 1885 by local residents, who dedicated it to the saint. He is credited with protecting the village from cholera.

Garéoult’s olive mill also tells the story of the town: it was built in 1732 on the ground floor of a residence on Rue Aschieri, near the church. Horses powered the mill until 1956, when frost damage to the olive trees brought production to an end. Another tradition links the church and the chapel: on the first Sunday in September, a bust of Saint Félix is carried in a procession from the church to the chapel. Check the date for the relevant year when planning your visit.

Hiking, Cycling and Time in Nature

The “Dans le Bois de Cavaillon” route starts near the Bastide de Garbelle. It is described as a moderately difficult 5.4 km hike, taking about 2 hours and 30 minutes. From the summit, the panorama stretches from the Massif des Maures in the south to the Alpine range in the north. The approximate walking time can help you plan your day. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Another way to get active is the Garéoult Bike Park on Boulevard de la Libération. This publicly accessible, wooded site covers 4,000 m² and features mountain bike trails and modules for different skill levels. It is managed by UFOLEP. Facilities and operating arrangements may change, so check the latest information before visiting.

The Parc naturel du Vivier is an 18,732 m² recreation and walking area beside a stream in Garéoult. It opened on 9 July 2022. The park has a playground, picnic area, vegetable garden, orchard and animals. Facilities and access arrangements may change; check these before your visit if needed.

Market and Local Traditions

The Tuesday market takes place in the morning throughout the year. It offers local products such as goat’s cheese and olive oil, as well as seasonal fruit and vegetables. The goods available may vary. Garéoult’s wineries offer wine tastings and sales; confirm with the winery in advance whether it is taking part and what arrangements apply to visits.

The communal bread oven is another recurring local tradition. It is used twice a year: for the Saint-Jean baking event and the Christmas event. Together with the Tuesday market, these occasions offer a glimpse of local customs without requiring you to plan around a specific event date.

Visits and Practical Information

The Saint-Félix Chapel can only be visited by appointment with the Les Amis de Saint Félix association. The association regularly organizes visits, so arrange your visit with them in advance.

The Musée de la nécropole Louis Cauvin displays grave goods such as vessels, glassware and oil lamps, information panels about the excavations, a fresco of the Garéoult plain, as well as a tomb beneath tiles and a funerary urn. The necropolis exhibition is accessible during town hall opening hours; the exhibits may change. A guided tour by A.S.E.R. is available on request for groups of more than 15 people and costs €3 per person. Confirm opening hours, visiting arrangements and reservation requirements in advance.
