Discover Rigaud as both a mountain village and a place marked by traces of its history. The village lies at an altitude of 753 metres on a rocky promontory and offers sweeping views over the lower Cians Valley. The hikes through the mountainous landscape and the evidence of local history offer different starting points for planning your visit. You can plan your stay around whether you mainly want to make time for hikes or explore the buildings and historic landmarks.

Mountain landscapes around Rigaud

The commune is highly mountainous and cut through by gorges. The Plateau de Dina occupies its central area. At 1,906 metres, the TĂȘte de Rigaud is the highest point in the commune. The Plateau de Dina covers around 1,000 hectares and is shared by Rigaud and Puget-Rostang. The village, highest point and plateau describe different facets of the landscape: the settlement at altitude, a prominent peak and an extensive area in the centre of the commune.

Hikes and mountain biking route

The hike to the Plateau de Dina is listed as taking 4 hours and 15 minutes and rated moderate. The route to the TĂȘte de Rigaud is listed as taking 6 hours and rated strenuous. The two hikes therefore differ both in the time required and in their difficulty rating. If you are choosing between them, these details can help you plan your day. Trail conditions and markings may change, so check them before setting off.

Another route described is the Les CrĂȘtes du Cians mountain biking traverse. It reaches the village of Rigaud and then descends to the Moulin de Rigaud. The route connects these two named points; it is distinct from the hikes to the Plateau de Dina and the TĂȘte de Rigaud.

Commandery and church

From 1251, Rigaud had the region’s most important commandery dedicated to Saint-Sauveur. The foundations and cistern of the former commandery can be seen at the top of the village. The site is thus still present in the local history through tangible architectural traces. These remains add two specific features—the foundations and the cistern—to the historical context of the commandery.

The Church of Saint-Antoine et de la Transfiguration began in 1200 as a chapel dedicated to San Salvadour. It houses a silver processional cross dating from 1519. The two dates mark different historical connections to the church: its beginnings as a chapel and the year the processional cross was made. The Chapel of Saint-Marc also stands in the Rubi district. It was recently restored and houses the altarpiece of the same name.

Historic buildings and crafts

Le Four Communal was rediscovered in the 1980s and restored to its original condition by the commune. On the village square is the Fontaine Lavoir, donated by MP Raphaël Bischoffsheim in 1898. The two sites point to different aspects of local history: the rediscovery and restoration of a communal building, and the donation of a fountain and washhouse.

Le Moulin à Huile dates from the 17th century and was powered by a donkey. The mill has been restored and can be visited by arrangement. Check the arrangements with the local site in advance. This visiting requirement is worth bearing in mind when planning, while the building’s history offers a glimpse of its former use as an olive oil mill.

La Maison du Patrimoine, also known as Maison du Miel, features a permanent exhibition with numerous beehives and equipment used in beekeeping and honey production. The exhibition focuses on working with bees and processing honey. Together with the churches, the former commandery and historic buildings once used for practical purposes, it offers a distinct way to explore the history and traditional activities of Rigaud.
