Berre-Les-Alpes: A Cliffside Village, History and Hikes
Accommodation in Berre-Les-Alpes
Berre-Les-Alpes is a village built on a rock at an elevation of about 700 metres. The village offers 360-degree panoramic views. Local history, landscapes and hikes give travellers concrete points of interest to help them get to know the destination.
A landscape of olive trees and chestnut trees
Numerous olive groves lie below the village, while chestnut forests stretch across the slopes above. Mimosas and pines also shape the landscape. The different elevations reveal distinct aspects of the surrounding area: olive trees characterise the lower-lying areas, while chestnut forests dominate the scenery higher up. Mimosa and pine add to these types of vegetation.
Local history and the village centre
A fortified settlement called Berre is documented in 1108; the village church associated with it is mentioned in 1156. The Église Saint-Laurent was built around 1368 on the site of an earlier structure. Its present-day façade dates from 1864. These dates mark different milestones: the fortified settlement, the mention of the village church, the construction of the Église Saint-Laurent and the later façade.
In the village centre, a network of lanes and vaulted passageways surrounds Place Bellevue. The passageways are just as much a part of the village's character as the paths between the lanes. Together with the church, they make up a visitor highlight that encompasses both the village's earlier history and its architectural details.
Hikes with a variety of stops
Le Cloutet is an easy two-and-a-half-hour hike that starts in the village square. Along the way, the route passes an old stone house built on a rock, as well as ruins and an old basin. Chestnut, mimosa and pine trees line the trail. The combination of these landscape sections and the architectural remains provides several specific points of interest along the hike.
The hike to the Source du Brusch leads to the former basin, “Brusch de 1882”. It was the first drinking water reservoir to supply the village. This trail therefore leads to a former part of the water supply system: the basin is not just a named destination, but is also connected to the history of Berre-Les-Alpes's water supply.
La Pighiéra also starts in the village square. The hike crosses an olive grove to several streams, follows the Pighiéra and then heads south via the Baisse de la Croix through a chestnut grove. The olive grove, streams and chestnut trees offer different highlights from the rocky and historic stops on Le Cloutet.
Chestnuts and regional tradition
The Fête des châtaignes is a traditional festival in Berre-Les-Alpes associated with regional produce. The festival recalls that, alongside mimosa, chestnut cultivation and use were the municipality's most important resource. The chestnut theme thus connects a cultural tradition with the former use of local resources, while chestnut forests remain part of the landscape today.
Galeries du Presbytère
The Galeries du Presbytère feature a permanent exhibition of works by Patrick Poggioli, including metal sculptures and pieces made from old tools. In August 2026, according to the municipality, the galleries were closed for construction work; check current access arrangements before visiting.
