Discover Touët-Sur-Var: Village History and Art
Accommodation in Touët-Sur-Var
Touët-sur-Var brings together an upper village perched on a rocky outcrop, traces of a former castle, distinctive church architecture, and a unique portrait collection. You can explore the village through these themes: in the Haut-Village, the focus is on a walking tour and the views; the town hall and old village streets reveal other cultural facets. This gives you concrete places to visit as you plan your interests for your stay.
Haut-Village: Walking Tour, Castle Remains, and Views
The upper part of Touët-sur-Var is a remarkable village perched on a rocky outcrop. You can explore the Haut-Village on a self-guided walking tour. Stops include the remains of a castle and an orientation board. At the upper end of the village, you will reach a viewpoint overlooking the Var Valley. The walk therefore highlights both the village’s architectural traces and the views.
Several paths also lead from the ruins of the former castle in the upper village. One named hike is the “Traversée Touët-sur-Var–Villars-sur-Var”: it starts at the car park on the RD 6202 in Touët-sur-Var, at an elevation of 340 metres. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The path from the railway station to the village offers a different way to explore on foot: it passes small canals and a water mill. The routes therefore differ in their starting points and character.
Art and Local History at the Town Hall and in the Village
The Galerie des Présidents is located in the town hall, opposite the Belvédère des Présidents. It displays a collection of portraits of all French presidents, unique in France, beginning with Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte. The town hall also features the permanent exhibition “REGARDS sur Touët-sur-Var,” with photographs and paintings. The building also houses an old olive mill with millstones and a press; the mill is still operational. If you plan to visit the gallery, check visiting arrangements before you travel.
Art also appears in the streetscape of the old village: Touët-sur-Var is known for its doors painted in a street-art style. This feature differs from the portraits in the gallery and the photographs and paintings in the permanent exhibition. Together with the old olive mill, these places offer insight into different aspects of the village—from portrait art and local imagery to a historic piece of working equipment.
Two Religious Buildings, Built in Different Periods
The Eglise Saint-Martin dates from the late 17th century and is built above a waterfall. Its furnishings include a gilded wooden high altar and an altarpiece dating from 1649. It should not be confused with the Romanesque Chapelle Saint-Martin in the lower village, which dates from the 11th or 12th century. Their different names and dates help distinguish the two religious buildings and place the history of each in context.
For a trip focused on village history, Touët-sur-Var offers several concrete points of interest: the self-guided walk through the Haut-Village, routes with different starting points, art at the town hall and in the old village, and buildings from different centuries. You can decide which places to prioritize based on your interest in views, hiking, art, or architecture.
