The Circuit de la Roquette passes numerous olive groves and leads into the village. There, it takes you to small squares, the recently restored church and a striking viewpoint over the Var Valley. Its descent follows a path along the crest of a broad, bare ridge of alluvial puddingstone. The olive groves, distinctive ridge and valley views each offer their own scenic highlights along this route.

Ridge and canal structure

The village lies on a narrow ridge running east to west, at an elevation of 380 metres. On the western side of La Roquette-sur-Var, Pointe de la Fubia reaches 566 metres. Since 2009, three information panels have been installed at the notable Portalet site. They help visitors and hikers discover the surrounding panoramas. The village’s elevation, its western high point and the information panels provide different reference points for the landscape. The two elevation figures differ by 186 metres.

The Canal de la Vésubie crosses La Roquette-sur-Var for approximately 2,670 metres. The Siphon de Saint-Blaise is a notable engineering structure on the canal and extends across several municipalities, including La Roquette-sur-Var. The local references differ: the canal is described in terms of its route through the municipality, while the siphon is described in terms of its extent across municipal boundaries.

Castel Vieil and the Notre-Dame-del-Bosc chapel

Castel Vieil was the first settlement of La Roquette-sur-Var and probably was home to a Ligurian community. The site was later inhabited in Roman times and during the Middle Ages. This sequence gives the settlement’s history several distinct periods without resolving the uncertainty about the Ligurian community.

The Notre-Dame-del-Bosc chapel has frescoes dating from 1526, attributed to Andrea de Cella. Pierre de Belletruche financed the chapel’s decoration. In addition, part of the compensation received by the inhabitants of La Roquette was used to partially restore the old chapel. The frescoes, financing and restoration shed light on different aspects of its history.
