La Brigue offers several practical starting points for planning a trip: medieval buildings and church art, insights into traditional local activities, and hiking and cycling options. The events calendar also follows different rhythms—from an annual autumn festival to a festival held every two years. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on architectural and art history, a tour or a particular festival.

Buildings and Art in La Brigue

The Pont du Coq crosses the Lévanza. This pedestrian bridge of medieval origin was rebuilt in 1710 and has been listed in its entirety as a historic monument since 1987. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines has also been classified as a historic monument, since 22 May 1951. Its 15th-century frescoes cover an area of 225 m². Guided tours are available by prior reservation; access arrangements may vary seasonally.

The Chapelle de l’Annonciade has an elliptical floor plan, characteristic of Baroque art. Its features include wall decorations and marble-effect finishes, with a cycle depicting the life of Christ. The chapel also houses the Collégiale’s treasury museum, which is occasionally open to the public. The Chapelle de l’Assomption is distinguished by a Renaissance-style façade and an Italian-influenced bell tower.

The Collégiale Saint-Martin houses a rich collection of 16th-century altarpieces. These include the Retable de l’adoration by Louis Bréa, the Retable de la crucifixion, and the altarpieces of Sainte Marthe and Saint Erasme. The collection also includes the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges triptych by Sébastien Fuzeri. These works give a visit a distinct art-historical focus, different from the chapel’s frescoes and the architecture of the other religious buildings.

Local Life and Traditions

The Maison du Patrimoine et des Traditions Brigasques offers an insight into traditional local life in La Brigue. Its themes include beekeeping, agriculture, forestry and wine production, sheep farming and cheesemaking. The Musée des Orgues Historiques is located upstairs. Visitors can explore different aspects of local history side by side, from working with animals and agricultural produce to preserving historic organs.

The Château des Lascaris is another historic landmark: only ruins remain today, and these have been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 1949. A local specialty is linked to sheep farming: milk from Brigasque sheep is used to make cheeses such as “sora” and “toma.” Opportunities to taste them may vary.

Routes and Activities

The La Brigue Via Ferrata runs above the medieval village and its 80 m-high vertical cliffs. The route includes eight monkey bridges and a 120 m-long zip line. As details of outdoor infrastructure can change, it is worth checking the latest route information before your visit.

For a hike, the Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende–La Brigue trail is a 4 km one-way route rated easy. Another option is the “balade brigasque,” an 8 km tourist cycling loop. The distances describe different formats: an easy one-way hiking route and a longer cycling loop. Route conditions may change; check them locally, especially if you are planning your trip around the route.

Festivals and Trip Planning

The FĂŞte de la Brebis Brigasque takes place every autumn in La Brigue. It celebrates the local sheep breed and traditional pastoral know-how. The La Brigue Medieval Festival, by contrast, is held every two years on the third weekend in July. If a festival is central to your trip, check the specific dates and programme before making plans.

La Brigue can be reached from Nice on the Train des Merveilles, which stops in La Brigue. Timetables and train services may change, so check the latest connections with SNCF before travelling.
