Acqueville: Church, Crosses and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Acqueville
Acqueville brings together a church with historic details and three walking trails that explore the local countryside. This gives you two distinct themes for planning your trip: culture and walking. If you’re looking for a hotel in Acqueville, these features can help you decide what you’d like to focus on during your visit.
Walking trails and a church as shared points of reference
Acqueville has three walking trails for exploring the local countryside. They link neighboring communities and lead to Notre-Dame church. If you’d like to include a walk in your day’s plans, the church as a shared destination and the connection to neighboring communities are useful points of reference. This lets you include both walking and a cultural destination in your travel plans.
Notre-Dame: different historical periods
Notre-Dame church dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. It contains an 18th-century tombstone with a carved cross and nimbus, or halo. A stained-glass window created by Gabriel Loire dates from 1960. The three dates refer to different elements: the building, the tombstone and the stained glass. Together, they offer a glimpse of the church’s different historical periods, from its construction to a work of 20th-century art.
A sundial is located at the southwest corner of the bell tower. A small fir tree grows from a crack in the tower, its roots having been anchored there for more than 200 years. The sundial and the fir tree offer different points of interest on the same building: one is an instrument for telling time, the other a natural detail with unusually deep roots.
Wayside crosses and their different features
The Croix aux Rois is a shortened monolithic granite wayside cross at the junction of the D22 and D123. Monolithic means made from a single stone; in this case, the stone is granite. The Croix du hameau Voisin stands at the junction of the D405 and the road to the hamlet of Voisin. It consists of two steps, a base, a shaft and a crossbar.
There is also a more recent cross in Acqueville cemetery, set on an older base dating from 1807. The date refers to the base; the cross above it is more recent. These three crosses differ in various ways: the material and crossroads location of the Croix aux Rois, the components and location of the Croix du hameau Voisin, and the relationship between the base and the cross in the cemetery.
More places to visit and accommodation
The manor house La Bélangerie, the Ferme du Hutrel and the former rectory are also worth a visit. La Bélangerie offers guest rooms and independent accommodation in a former outbuilding.
