Auxais: Marshes, Churches and a Circular Walking Route
Accommodation in Auxais
Auxais offers several thematic ways to explore the area: the Marais d’Auxais as a natural environment, its churches and château history, and the “Les églises et marais de la Taute” circular walking route. If you are planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus primarily on the landscape, the architectural history or a walk. This makes it possible to consider the natural and cultural highlights separately and take the length of the route into account when planning your trip.
The Marais d’Auxais as a natural environment
The Marais d’Auxais is a peat bog in the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin. It lies on five metres of peat and is nestled between the Méreau, the Ruisseau de la Bucaille and the Taute. It is also one of the eleven sensitive natural areas (ENS) in the marshlands protected by the Manche département. The Marais is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. More than 160 plant species grow there; around 30 are rare in Normandy or may be protected. For nature enthusiasts, this brings together landscape and biodiversity: the peat layer, its setting between three waterways and its plant life give the Marais its distinctive character.
Church architecture after 1944
The church of Notre-Dame d’Auxais was built after the former church was damaged during the fighting in 1944. The plans were drawn up by architect Pierre-André Lebreton; construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1960. Architecturally, Notre-Dame has a flat-ended choir and a bell tower with a pitched roof—two features traditionally used in local religious architecture. A flat-ended choir has a straight termination, while the term “bell tower with a pitched roof” describes the tower’s roof shape. The nave features triangular reinforced-concrete trusses. Groups of three round-arched window openings light the interior. These details offer points of interest if you want to look at architectural forms, materials and post-war history.
Churches and historic sites
The former church of Auxais, also known as the “Cathédrale des Rotz”, is a protected historic monument. The church of Saint-Martin in Auxais offers panoramic views of the surrounding Marais du Cotentin. These present two different points of interest: the former church is notable for its protected status, while Saint-Martin offers views of the surrounding marshland. If you are planning a trip that takes in both architecture and landscape, they offer different places to start.
The Château d’Auxais was a former private château. It disappeared after the fighting in 1944 and was surrounded by a water-filled moat. From the bridge over the moat, you can see the restored chapel.
The circular walking route in Auxais
The “Les églises et marais de la Taute” walking route is a circular trail in Auxais. It is listed as taking three hours and thirty minutes. This makes the walk a dedicated block of time in your plans, rather than a short break between other activities. You can then decide how much time to set aside for the route alongside the landscape and heritage highlights of your stay.
