Saint-Jacques-De-Néhou: Heritage and Ceramics
Accommodation in Saint-Jacques-De-Néhou
Saint-Jacques-De-Néhou combines architectural and art history with a pottery tradition and a walking trail through the surrounding area. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you may be interested in individual historic buildings and works of art, or you may also want to include a walking route and the biodiversity of the bocage landscape.
Manor house and sacred art
Manoir de Gonneville is a historic manor house in Saint-Jacques-De-Néhou. The manor house’s façades and roofs, as well as those of the outbuildings enclosing the courtyard, are protected as historic monuments. The protected features also include the fireplace in the large room on the ground floor of the Henri IV pavilion, the fireplace in the right-hand room of the 16th-century building, and the dovecote. The protection was registered by decree on 29 August 1977. The listed features therefore range from façades and roofs to individual architectural elements and the dovecote.
The heritage of the Église Saint-Jacques-de-Néhou includes a carved wooden statue of the Virgin Mary dating from around 1300 and a holy-water stoup made of Néhou terracotta from the 19th century. An angel holds a shell on the stoup. The two objects bring together different materials and periods: medieval wood sculpture on the one hand, and 19th-century ceramic design on the other. This comparison complements the architectural history of the manor house with concrete examples of sacred art and craftsmanship.
A pottery tradition with regional roots
Flower vases from Néhou were made in the village of Mourot, now Saint-Jacques-De-Néhou. Because of their decorative rings, they are often called wedding vases; each pot has four rings. Their origin, design and name provide different points of reference for the local history of ceramics. Saint-Jacques-De-Néhou was also part of the pottery centre of northern Cotentin, which is associated with a total of 24 kilns, workshops or potteries. This figure refers to the regional centre as a whole. The history of the vases can thus be linked both to present-day Mourot and to the broader craft tradition of northern Cotentin.
Exploring the surroundings on foot
The Sentier des Eoliennes is a walking trail for discovering the surroundings in the municipality of Saint-Jacques-De-Néhou. It was renovated and inaugurated in 2025. Six educational and explanatory signs are complemented by two more introducing the biodiversity of the bocage landscape. The trail also presents the history and the natural and architectural heritage of the municipality and its surroundings.
The Sentier des Eoliennes therefore offers a different focus from individual buildings and works of art: along the trail, several themes relating to the municipality and its surroundings come together, including history, nature and architectural heritage. If you want to consider both cultural history and an opportunity to explore on foot when choosing your destination, these different themes offer a practical guide.
