If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-James, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: cultural events, historic buildings and trails, or the rolling green landscape. The town combines regular events, a summer programme and historic sites. You can decide whether a specific event, the town’s history, or a route through the town and its surroundings should shape your visit.

Cultural events and seasonal dates

The Centre culturel de Saint-Benoît is housed in a former church that was deconsecrated in 1994. Exhibitions, theatre performances and musical events are held there regularly. Vaults and stained-glass windows define the preserved architecture. In this same building, its former use as a church meets today’s cultural programme.

Other events bring different highlights to the calendar throughout the year. An open-air photography festival is held annually in Saint-James. The Soirées Champêtres, organised by the municipality, take place on summer evenings in Bas des Rivières and offer family entertainment as well as concerts. The Foire Saint-Macé carries on a centuries-old tradition and brings together visitors, craftspeople, producers and fairground entertainers. Over three days, it features exhibition areas, a funfair, an agricultural section, concerts, a DJ night and fireworks. The programme may vary. If your trip depends on a festival or the Foire, check the specific event dates in advance.

Walking routes and historic buildings

The Flânerie dans son histoire is a 3.5-kilometre walking route through the centre of Saint-James. It focuses on the town’s history and buildings; stops on the historic town tour include the Tour de la Redoute, among others. The chemin de ronde offers a different perspective on the fortifications: much of the town walls remain, and the circular route offers a chance to experience the thousand-year history of the fortifications.

The Saint-Jacques Priory is also part of the historic heritage. When it was founded, it was entrusted to Benedictine monks from the royal abbey of Fleury-sur-Loire. Remains of the cloister from the late 17th century have been preserved. The Polissoir La pierre Saint-Benoît is located in Saint-James and was classified as a historic monument by decree on 5 December 1977.

Landscape, trails and other interests

Those interested in trails and scenery will find several landmarks. The Chemin de Tours, also called the Grand Chemin montois, passes through Saint-James. Its waymarkers point in both directions: towards Mont-Saint-Michel and Compostela. By contrast, the Flânerie in the town centre focuses on local history and buildings. The Beuvron and Dierge rivers flow through the municipality of Saint-James. From the roads and trails, the rolling green landscape opens up views of the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel.

The workshops of Tricots SAINT JAMES also offer an insight into traditional craftsmanship involved in making the sailor’s sweater and the marinière. The visit explains the process of making the sailor’s sweater, from design to production. Before visiting the workshop, check the current arrangements for visits, as booking rules may change. The Centre équestre de la Dierge hosts equestrian events and riding competitions. Alongside culture and history, crafts and equestrian sports thus offer different themes to choose from for your stay.
