On the English Channel, Héauville sits beside a wild dune and has preserved its rural character. A dune strip about 1.2 kilometres long defines the area; at the same time, the landscape is part of a larger dune massif. The Grand Douet flows into the sea near Héauville. Here, the coastline, bodies of water and dune topography come together to create a landscape closely linked to the English Channel.

Dunes, Bodies of Water and Nature

The Dunes de Biville protected area includes parts of Vasteville, Héauville, Siouville-Hague and Biville. It covers 341.38 hectares and is open to the public. The dune massif comprises a mosaic of dunes and small bodies of water; its hollows are temporarily flooded each winter. The riverside woodland of the Grand Douet in Vasteville and Héauville is a priority habitat within the dune area. Thus, alongside the dunes, bodies of water, hollows and riverside woodland are also defining features of the landscape. The two measurements describe different areas: around 1.2 kilometres refers to Héauville’s dune strip, while the area in hectares refers to the protected area, which extends across parts of four communes.

Paths and Views across the Coastal Landscape

From higher paths, the GR223 offers views of barchan dunes and damp dune hollows. Two route descriptions also provide guidance on the views and landforms. On the return leg, the Siouville-Hague heritage trail follows the Chemin du Seuil, offering a view of the Héauville dune massif. The “Entre landes et dunes” route leads from the harbour quays of Port Diélette to the dune massif and crosses bocage landscapes and wild heathland. The routes have different focuses: the GR223 takes in the barchan dunes and damp hollows, while “Entre landes et dunes” also features the heathland and bocage landscapes along the way.

For regional context, the classified coastal strip has extended from Landemer to Héauville since 1992. The D64 departmental road runs near Héauville and connects La Hague in the north with Siouville-Hague in the south. These details therefore describe both the coastal area and a north–south road connection, without identifying Héauville itself as an endpoint of that connection.

Manor House, Church and Historic Wayside Crosses

The architectural heritage can also be understood through specific details. The oldest parts of the Manoir d’Héauville date from the 16th century. An entry dated 19 November 1976 partially protects the façades and roofs of the Manoir de Heauville as a historic monument; the outbuildings are excluded. Two 18th-century wayside crosses mark different locations: the granite Croix Longue stands at the junction of the D405 and the church path, while the Croix Côme is in the hamlet of Riglon, beside the D37.

The parish of the Church of Saint-Germain d’Auxerre in Héauville was established at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century. The Church of Saint-Germain has a baptismal font with a rectangular basin on a cylindrical base. Historically, the church and priory of Héauville formed a single complex. The priory is said to have been founded in 1027 and was home to just four members of the religious order. Taken together, the church, priory and wayside crosses offer insight into different aspects of the area’s history: the development of the parish, the historic complex and the locations of individual heritage features in the area.

Considering Héauville as a Travel Destination

Two main attractions can help you choose where to stay: the dune and waterside landscape on the English Channel, and the historic heritage, including the manor house, church, priory and wayside crosses. If you are looking for hotels in Héauville, these themes can help guide your choice. The nature information gives an impression of the landforms and their seasonally flooded hollows; the historical details show which buildings and monuments bring the area’s history to life.
