In Graignes-Mesnil-Angot, you can plan your trip around a range of themes: the protected wetlands of the Taute, architectural history, a cycling route or harness racing. Information about the landscape, route and buildings can help you choose a focus for your stay.

Wetlands and regional waterways

The Réserve naturelle des marais de la Taute nature reserve includes protected wetland plots in Graignes-Mesnil-Angot. The reserve provides habitat for 73 notable plant species, including marsh pea and floating water-crowfoot. So, alongside the marshland landscape, the area’s natural attractions include specific botanical highlights.

The Canal de Vire et Taute is 11.5 kilometres long and connects the Vire and Taute rivers. Visitors can follow the old towpath along the canal and discover the Maison des Ormes, Port des Planques, Port de la Maltote, La Tringale, Château de la Rivière and the Porribet lock. The information panels cover history, the environment, marshlands and white storks. The canal’s themes thus range from historical and ecological aspects to wildlife.

Cycling route with an estimated duration

For an active day out, the Les rives des marais de Graignes cycling route offers a clear itinerary: it is 17 kilometres long, rated easy and has an estimated duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes. The route starts at Place de l'église and follows roads shared with other users. The estimated duration can help you plan. Check route conditions before setting off.

Church architecture and remembrance

The Église Saint-Michel de Graignes was built from 1956 to 1958 under the direction of architect Guy Pison (1905–1986). The church has been protected in its entirety since 16 June 2005. Its load-bearing structure has been left visible; the different concrete finishes include reinforced concrete, gravel concrete, shuttered concrete, bush-hammered concrete and washed concrete. The structure and surface treatments are therefore important aspects of the building.

The stained glass is also part of the architecture: the windows are made of coloured glass panels and were created by the glass artist François Chapuis (1928–2002). A different historical connection is preserved in the choir of the former church of Graignes, which became the Mémorial franco-américain. The 1950s church and the memorial to the former church can thus be viewed as distinct traces of history.

Harness racing track and event dates

The Hippodrome de Graignes is a harness racing track with a 1,034-metre sand track and left-handed course. Its annual programme includes more than 30 race and event dates. If a race or event is the reason for your trip, check the specific date before making plans. The track details describe the venue; the individual date is also important when planning a visit.

First consider whether you would like to plan your stay mainly around the cycling route, the architecture, the marshlands or a visit to the racecourse.
