La Pernelle brings together listed buildings, sacred history and themed hiking trails for a varied stay. Notable places include the Manoir d’Ourville, the grotto above the church and traces of the Second World War. A natural area classified as heathland and two hiking trails also shape the landscape. When planning your visit, it helps to decide in advance whether culture, pilgrimage or hiking will be your main focus.

Cultural history between monument and grotto

The former guard post in La Pernelle is partly listed as a historic monument. Its listing, dated 5 May 1975, protects its façades and roofs. At the Manoir d’Ourville, the façades and roofs are also protected, along with the entrance portico and the gateway leading to the garden. It was listed on 3 July 1975. At Sainte-Pétronille Church, the bell tower has been listed as a historic monument since 5 May 1975. The protected features therefore differ from one site to another: at the manor, the portico and garden gateway are also included.

The La Pernelle grotto was created in 1928 in the rock above the church. It contains a statue of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes; the grotto was designed as an attempt to recreate the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes. A popular pilgrimage takes place here every year in August. If you plan to attend, check the exact date in advance.

The Wn 144 fortification, dating from the Second World War, is part of the area’s military history. It comprises nine recorded structures, all nine of which are visible; its historical and cultural significance is considered exceptional. Access may vary depending on the structure and ownership. A Regelbau 608-type bunker was built in La Pernelle in 1943 to house the staff of Grenadier Regiment 729, commanded by Colonel Helmuth Rohrbach. The structure is in very good condition.

Heathland, views and hiking trails

The Landes de la Pernelle is one of the 35 Espaces Naturels Sensibles (Sensitive Natural Areas) in the Manche department and is classified as heathland. Visitors who want to include nature in their stay will find a different focus here from that of the historic buildings. La Pernelle also offers wide-ranging views across the Val de Saire, stretching from the Gatteville lighthouse to Pointe du Hoc and taking in the Vauban towers in the bay of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. Weather and seasonal visibility affect how clearly these landmarks can be seen.

The “Panorama sur le Val de Saire” hiking trail is an easy, 5.8-kilometre circular route with 131 metres of elevation gain. It starts and finishes at the La Pernelle viewpoint. The distance and elevation gain provide concrete indications of the route’s demands; check the route details locally before setting out.

The “La Vigie du Val de Saire” hiking trail starts at Sainte-Pétronille Church. It is not served by the Cap Cotentin bus network, but it is accessible by car; there is a car park near the starting point. As transport services or parking conditions may change, it is advisable to check for updates before your hike. The two trails can be distinguished by their respective starting points and the route information available.
