In Sallenelles, walking trails and the landscape of the Orne Estuary take centre stage. The tourist trail includes two walking routes of approximately the same duration. The estuary’s natural and cultural heritage is also part of the travel experience: the Maison de la Nature et de l’Estuaire has a permanent exhibition devoted to it. You can therefore plan your stay around the trails, natural environment or cultural heritage.

The landscape of the Orne Estuary

The Orne Estuary encompasses mudflats, salt meadows, wet meadows, and shifting and wooded dunes. Together, these features form a diverse natural environment: alongside wet areas and meadows, there are also several types of dune landscape. If you base your travel plans on nature, the estuary offers several clearly defined landscape types rather than just one natural attraction.

The estuary stretches across five municipalities and covers 1,000 hectares. This figure describes the entire estuary area, not Sallenelles alone. For travel planning, it is therefore useful to distinguish between the town and the wider nature area: local trails and the entire estuary landscape are different points of reference that you can take into account depending on your priorities.

Walking routes and distances

The Sallenelles tourist trail includes two walking routes, one blue and one yellow. Each takes about 45 minutes. The time is the same for both, while the colours distinguish the routes. If you are planning your stay around a specific time slot, you can choose between two colour-coded options of roughly the same duration.

A 5-kilometre walking trail and a 6-metre-high observation tower offer ways to explore the Orne Estuary. Unlike the walking routes, the trail is described by its length, while the tourist trail is described by its approximate duration. This gives you two different planning measures to compare: time for the walking routes and distance for the walking trail.

Maison de la Nature et de l’Estuaire

Three walking trails start at the Maison de la Nature et de l’Estuaire. As the selection of routes may change, check which trails are currently available before setting out. The Maison also has a permanent exhibition about the natural and cultural heritage of the Orne Estuary. Nature and cultural heritage are therefore both covered by the exhibition, which presents the estuary not only as a landscape but also in its cultural dimension.

The Maison is accessible by car via the D514, by cycle path or Voie Verte, and by Nomad bus line 20. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current services before setting off. This allows you to plan your journey using whichever of the listed transport options suits you.

“La baie de Sallenelles” walking trail

After a stretch along the seashore, the “La baie de Sallenelles” walking trail continues into the Baie de l’Orne. The route also passes through the village of Sallenelles. Both are important when considering the route: it includes both the bay and the village. If you plan your trip around the destinations along a trail, this route connects a stretch of seashore with the bay and the village.
