Maltot – Heritage, Art and Fruit Growing
Accommodation in Maltot
When looking for a hotel for a stay in Maltot, you can plan your trip around the topics that interest you: church architecture and remembrance, art, château history or fruit growing. The Église Saint-Pierre and the Stèle Dorset Régiment represent architectural and commemorative history. The Atelier Galerie de Maltot is devoted to contemporary art; the Château and the Verger de Sauvegarde Yves Fournière offer other areas of interest. Visiting arrangements and the bus connection to Caen are also relevant when planning your trip.
Church architecture and remembrance in Maltot
The choir of the Église Saint-Pierre dates from the first half of the 13th century and has been classified as a historic monument since 19 January 1911. It consists of two bays. Pointed arches and columns shape it both inside and out; grotesque corbels support the exterior cornices. These details give the church choir a distinctive architectural character.
The Romanesque nave is also part of the architectural history of the Église Saint-Pierre. It was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt after the war. The choir and nave thus represent different building phases: the choir dates back to the Middle Ages, while the nave bears the marks of wartime destruction and postwar reconstruction.
The Stèle Dorset Régiment commemorates the liberation of Maltot by British troops on 23 July 1944. Together with the history of the nave, it refers to the same year of the war, but to two different aspects: the destruction of part of the building and the liberation of the village.
The Château de Maltot and its park
Jean-Jacques Fortin had the Château de Maltot built in 1740. It is set in a wooded park covering several hectares. The château and park offer two different ways to explore Maltot: the building’s history and the wooded surroundings in which it is located.
Art at the Atelier Galerie de Maltot
The Atelier Galerie de Maltot is devoted to abstract painting, artists’ books, writing and contemporary ceramics. Its range brings visual art together with books and texts. Three exhibitions are presented each year with invited painters, sculptors and ceramicists, bringing several artistic disciplines into the exhibition program.
The Atelier Galerie is open year-round by appointment. If you are planning a visit, you should therefore arrange an appointment in advance. This appointment requirement is an important difference from a visit that can be made without prior arrangements.
Fruit varieties and workshops at the Verger de Sauvegarde Yves Fournière
The Verger de Sauvegarde Yves Fournière contains 202 pear varieties and 438 apple varieties. The number of apple varieties is therefore more than twice that of the pear varieties. The orchard offers a tangible insight into the diversity of these two fruit species, although apples and pears are not represented in equal proportions.
Activities at the Verger include making apple juice. It also offers fruit-growing workshops on pruning and various grafting methods. These topics range from caring for fruit trees to different grafting techniques. The Verger regularly welcomes schools and groups by appointment.
