Janville: Trails, Nature and Teurgoule
Accommodation in Janville
When choosing a hotel in Janville, different travel interests may play a role: the commune has a designated sports loop and a sports area by the town hall; a tourist cycling route also passes through the north-eastern part of the area.
Trails and Activities in Janville
The designated sports loop is 2.8 kilometres long. It starts at the town hall, follows the Chemin des Écoliers, the Chemin de Calleville and the so-called Chemin Bertin, then returns to the town hall. As route details may change if local paths are modified, check the latest route information before setting out.
A different option is the départementale cycling route, designed for tourism. It passes through the north-eastern part of the area and runs through Janville, Saint-Pierre-du-Jonquet, Saint-Ouen-du-Mesnil-Oger and Cléville. The two routes are therefore clearly different: the sports loop has a stated length and return point at the town hall, while the cycling route is defined by its course through several communes.
Next to the town hall is a multi-generational sports area with more than seven pieces of exercise equipment and a second combined handball and basketball facility. This equipment may also change, so check before visiting whether it is still up to date.
Landscape and Natural Environment
Janville lies on the western escarpment of the Pays d’Auge and the Marais de la Dives. Bocage hedgerows, scattered copses, agricultural land and large pastures shape the landscape and offer far-reaching views of the marshland and surrounding villages. Bocage refers to a cultivated landscape divided by hedgerows; the term thus describes the relationship between pastures, agricultural land and copses.
The ZNIEFF “Marais de la Dives et ses affluents” includes Janville and extends across much of the northern part of the commune and along its eastern edge. The area consists of meadows with varying degrees of dampness, poplar stands and agricultural land criss-crossed by numerous drainage channels. It continues to have high ecological potential.
The conditions are favourable for white storks (Ciconia ciconia) to nest along the hedgerow-lined edges of the Marais de la Dives. They have nested there every year since 1978. Thus, alongside the wetland habitats, a specific animal species and its nesting are also part of Janville’s landscape.
Regional Cuisine and Event
Janville teurgoule is an authentic Norman dessert made with farm milk, rice, sugar, salt and cinnamon. It is made by a family business founded in 1993.
A FĂŞte de la Pomme is held in Janville in partnership with Camille et Terre de liens. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.
