Annebault: Medieval History, Church and Memorial Stelae
Accommodation in Annebault
Annebault has several historical points of interest: the remains of a medieval fortified site with a feudal motte, Église Saint-Rémy and memorial stelae commemorating the liberation of the town. These themes span the history of medieval fortifications, religious art and remembrance of the liberation. When planning your trip, it helps to keep the different historical periods in mind.
Medieval site and Église Saint-Rémy
The remains belong to a medieval fortified site with a feudal motte. This classification highlights the history of fortifications and distinguishes the site from the artworks in Église Saint-Rémy. Ownership is relevant when planning a visit: the remains of the motte are owned by a private company, and public access is not guaranteed. Check in advance whether a visit is possible rather than planning the site as a freely accessible attraction.
Église Saint-Rémy is another historical highlight. It was restored and renovated in 2010. The church may date entirely from the 13th century; its construction date is therefore not certain. The possible dating and the confirmed work carried out in 2010 serve different purposes: one concerns the building’s construction, the other its later restoration.
Artworks in Église Saint-Rémy
The furnishings include an altarpiece with a winged tabernacle, a painting of the Adoration of the Magi and two altarpieces for side altars. An altarpiece is an altar panel; the two side-altar altarpieces are therefore distinct from the work with the winged tabernacle. The painting provides a separate pictorial highlight, while the altarpieces are altar panels. Visitors interested in religious art will find a different focus here than in the possible date of the church building.
Memorial stelae commemorating Annebault’s liberation
The memorial stelae commemorate British soldiers of the 8th and 9th Parachute Battalions who fell during the liberation of Annebault. They stand in the town centre on the D45, near the calvary. Their location provides a clear landmark in the town; check local conditions before visiting. The stelae were inaugurated on 21 August 1994, on the 50th anniversary. This date marks the inauguration, not the liberation itself. In contrast to the medieval motte and the possible dating of the church to the 13th century, the focus here is on remembering an event from the Second World War.
Tours with tastings on the Cider Route
Tours with tastings are offered at one of the cider cellars along the Cider Route. Such a tour combines a cellar visit with a tasting, providing a different focus from Annebault’s historical attractions. Availability may vary from one cellar to another. Check in advance which options are available during your trip. If you are interested in cider as well as local history, you can take this into account when planning.
