Honfleur Between Art, History and Nature
Accommodation in Honfleur
When looking for a hotel in Honfleur, consider the interests you want to shape your trip: architectural history, art and music, maritime heritage, gardens or cycling. The places and activities differ not only in subject but also in format—from a church or museum to a scenic tour or a route with different types of paths.
Art, Music and Architectural History
Sainte Catherine Church has been classified as a historic monument since May 3, 1870. Its construction history goes back further: the first nave was probably built by shipwrights before 1468. These are two distinct dates—the probable construction period of the first nave and the precisely dated year of its classification. The connection with shipbuilding also makes the church’s architectural history a tangible way to explore the history of the place.
At the Musée Eugène-Boudin, a collection of artists from the Seine estuary is complemented by a precisely numbered collection of works. The museum owns 105 works by Eugène Boudin, including 50 paintings and 55 drawings in pencil, watercolor and pastel. Across several floors, it also displays an extensive collection of pre-Impressionist and contemporary paintings by artists from the Seine estuary. The figures refer to Boudin’s works; the larger collection also includes paintings by other artists.
Since 1998, the Maisons Satie have offered a scenic and musical tour celebrating Erik Satie. The musician and composer was born in Honfleur in 1866. The Musée d’ethnographie, by contrast, centers on a 16th-century half-timbered house: the building once served as the prison of the Vicomté de Roncheville. In different ways, these two places offer a glimpse into the history of music and the former use of a historic building.
The Lieutenance houses a center for interpreting architecture and heritage, with a focus on Honfleur’s maritime history. It also provides access to elevated outdoor terraces with a 360° panoramic view of Honfleur. The Blockhaus de la Gare represents a different chapter of history: it is one of the last surviving traces of the Second World War in Honfleur. In the 350 m² building, which could accommodate 200 soldiers, an exhibition features more than 30 period uniforms, along with documents and photographs.
Gardens, Nature and Active Perspectives
The Jardin des Personnalités is located on a former tidal flat in the estuary. Set across ten landscaped hectares, it offers a walking trail with garden boats and busts of figures from Honfleur’s historical and cultural heritage. Nature takes a different form at Naturospace: the tropical greenhouse is home to hundreds of exotic butterflies that fly freely among tropical plants and colorful birds. The two attractions have distinct focuses—landscaped garden grounds and a tropical greenhouse environment.
The Vélomaritime–La Seine à Vélo cycling route offers another perspective. It starts in Honfleur and continues to Pont-l’Évêque. Part of the route follows a voie verte, a traffic-free path, while the rest runs along roads shared with other users. These different types of paths are relevant when planning your route; detailed conditions along the way may change, so check them before setting out.
Honfleur’s historic center covers 37 hectares of preserved areas and is rich in historic buildings. For a different view of the town, Aventura departs from Honfleur harbor. Departures depend on the season, weather and demand. If you are planning a trip, check departure times for your travel dates.
